In the recent years many merchants, which possess online stores, have developed affiliate or partnership programs. These companies are looking for agents who can promote their products in the internet using other websites or blogs as the advertising channel and receiving monthly commissions for it. There are different types of commissions – some companies pay per sale, other’s pay per lead. Usually it is in range of 5%, 10%, 20% commissions from actual sale.

If you think about starting earning money in the internet and you have your own website, then you can promote a merchant company and earn monthly commissions without any investment. You don't even need to have your own webpage - you can start by posting comments, sending recommendation emails and writing articles in forums and other people blogs.

Companies provide agents with information, tools, training and any support they need. For agents it is very easy to start earning money in the internet because you don't need to develop your own product, you don't need to invest any capital (except time) to start your own business.

That’s the reasons why this type of internet marketing is developing so quickly. Here are some statistics of the last few years:

The value of Affiliate marketing in the UK.

Online shopping has been predicted to account round 40% of all UK retail sales by 2020*. Currently households are spending up to 10% (£ 980) of their annual shopping budget online – usually for holidays, electronics, clothes and gifts items.

Affiliate marketing in the UK has grown by estimated 45% during 2007, taking the total value of online sales generated by this channel for that year to over £3 billion**. With a conservative estimate of commissions and fees paid out to affiliate networks amounting to £186 million, an increase of 40% on 2006. This covers both the affiliate commission and network override.

The same report** found that UK merchants involved in affiliate marketing drive 16% of their online sales via this channel and that 78% of them expected to be "more reliant" on affiliate marketing by 2009.

In the light of these statistics and predictions it is clear that affiliate marketing should form part of an integrated and successful digital marketing strategy.
