Vehicle Maintenance: Tips for Winter Car Maintenance

By AutoExperts
Dec 5, 2011 - 8:53:28 AM

A recent auto industry survey found that 5 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities are clearly caused by neglecting necessary vehicle maintenance. To enhance the safety of you and your passengers, extend the life of your vehicle, and even be good to the environment, just follow the simple tips listed below. You might want to consult your owner's manual as well for specific car maintenance schedules as these can vary by manufacturer.

10 Tips for Vehicle Maintenance!

  1. Change the oil and filter on a regular basis.  Consult your owner's manual, but typically every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
  2. Check all fluids frequently, including brakes, power steering, transmission/transaxle, windshield washer solvent, battery, and antifreeze. Fresh fluids and proper levels enhance the safety and performance of your vehicle.
  3. Check the air pressure in your tires at least once a month. This is the least expensive form of preventive and safety maintenance.  Under-inflated tires can result in less miles per gallon.
  4. Keep your engine tuned up. A fouled spark plug or plugged/restricted fuel injector can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent.
  5. Have the chassis lubricated frequently to extend the life of the moving parts in the suspension system.
  6. Check battery cables and posts for corrosion and clean them as needed. Check the battery fluid and fill if it is too low.
  7. Check the lighting system frequently, including headlights, turn signals, brake lights and taillights.  You want to see, and to be seen!
  8. Check windshield wiper blades for cracks, tears and windshield contact. Replace them if streaking begins, which could be at least once a year, especially in rainy climates.
  9. Inspect engine belts regularly for cracks and missing sections. Worn belts will affect engine performance.
  10. Check the air filtration system frequently (at least every other oil change) to ensure that it isn’t clogged or damaged, so that your vehicle will perform at top-notch condition.
