The prompt and secure destruction of data and confidential company documents should not be taken for granted. As the amount of data increases in the world, as does the need to securely destroy it to prevent unscrupulous individuals or of groups well organised criminals accessing it for their own illegal needs. However, the skills and techniques that these people use are also ever-developing, and the rightful owners of this data need to try to stay one step ahead with advice from companies that specialise in protecting and destroying your personal data. It can be compared to the virus / anti-virus war, and burglars versus locks, and if you want to look at it in its most basic or original form; predator versus prey in a natural evolution. Nowadays, there are people who want access to your confidential and personal information for a number of reasons, and preventing them could be more important to each of us than we fully understand or are prepare to acknowledge.

Identity theft is probably the one thing that is most likely to affect or worry the likes of you and I but it is not just the handling of our own domestic data that can lead to this. The dozens, sometimes hundreds, of businesses and organizations that have our details on file also need to store then destroy the files responsibly so as not to effect the financial security of their clients. Data destruction is not only big business, it is vital to our privacy and convenience. Spam, junk mail, soliciting telephone calls, SMS advertising, and targeted marketing are considered a general nuisance, but imagine if all of them were multiplied in their frequency. The life of the average person, trying to go through their daily routine, would be an obstacle course of avoiding people trying to sell to us, survey us or get us to join whatever crusade they are part of. Identity theft in itself is something else. Being inconvenienced is one thing, but having your digital identity taken and used by someone else is a very serious matter, but at least it can be dealt with and sorted out in the long run with little or no financial loss, just a huge amount of inconvenience. However, worse is having someone spend your money for you. Ok, most of the credit card companies and banks have a system where they will absorb the losses through one of their insurance subsidiaries, but when it is your own hard-earned money sitting in a deposit account that someone gets hold of it is far different. I recently lost my ATM card, and worried all night until I could check the balance because the card can easily be used in shops with just a signature. I didn’t have much in there, but luckily nothing was spent.

So, the next time you think that some large company is wasting time, resources or money or the safe destruction of data, just think how important the process is to anyone in the world with a bank account, telephone number, or home or email address.
