Bad breath is a result of two things: oral hygiene and gastrointestinal health. The culprit in both cases is largely bacteria. Good oral hygiene, of course, is still the best way to keep your breath sweet. But some kinds of food and drink can actually fight bad breath. Go ahead and grab one of these five choices to freshen your breath between meals.
1. The essential oil in cinnamon kills a nasty type of oral bacteria, discouraging it from setting up house in your mouth. Sticks of cinnamon aren¡¯t so easy to munch on, unless you like the flavour of bark. Cinnamon or mint gum is just as effective. If you pick a gum sweetened with xylitol, it will freshen breath and help reduce cavities.
2. The yogurt has a positive effect on the breath in that it promotes ¡°good¡± bacteria to the detriment of ¡°bad¡± bacteria (those that generate volatile sulfur compounds). You must, however, must choose plain yoghurt without sugar otherwise the negative effects of sugar will destroy the positive effects of yogurt.
3. The polyphenols or compounds in black tea may help your breath in two ways: First, they prevent the growth of bacteria that can cause foul breath. Second, they decrease the bacteria¡¯s production of stinky byproducts. Black tea has also been shown to help prevent tooth decay; so all in all, this steaming beverage makes for a good mouth freshener! One thing to beware: too much caffeine can dry out your mouth. Since that can also do a number on your breath, keep your tea intake to a moderate level, or go for decaf.
4. Consume more foods which are high in fiber. Fiber rich foods contain apples, whole grain breads, peaches, cereals, potatoes etc. It will help you to clear out your bowels frequently therefore avoiding build up of toxic and indigestions. This is one of the best bad breath cure.
5. All cheese will immediately break down to a bad smell within hours of being eaten ¨C in fact, the amino acid Methionine in cheese will quickly break down to a pooey sulphur-like smell. Milk also will break down to smells within hours as it is high in the amino acid Cysteine, which breaks down in our digestive tract to Hydrogen Sulphide - the rotten eggs smell. Milk and cheese will increase the amount of mucous collecting in the back of the throat, which can be another cause of bad breath. Rice Milk or Oat Milk are a good dairy substitute recommended by doctors, but some people may find the A2 range of milks also helps reduce the incidence of stinky breath.
6. To avoid bad breath, it is essential to be able to salivate and drool enough, you should drink plenty (water preferably ¡). Saliva has two beneficial effects: 1) it has natural antibacterial properties which limit the proliferation of anaerobic bacteria. 2) saliva also has a mechanical action, continually rinsing the mouth, it causes food residues to the stomach.
7. Quit smoking. Tar and nicotine can build up on the surface of the teeth, lungs, tongue and cheeks. It is absorbed in bloodstream and exhaled in your breath; it can also dry the mouth and inhibit saliva flow.
8. Apples, carrots, celery¡ªbasically any fibre-rich fruit or vegetable is your friend when it comes to fighting halitosis. Eating foods that increase saliva production keep the mouth moist¡ªand rinsed out. Also, many carbs and proteins can get stuck in your teeth¡ªeven healthy foods like whole grain cereal or chicken breast.
9. A few drops of peppermint or tea tree oil can be applied to the tongue or toothbrush to help freshen the breath. In addition to its refreshing nature, their antibacterial properties will kill the bacteria found in the mouth.
