In this day and age we find ourselves with a variety of ways in which we can pay for things. Whether it be in a store or online there are dramatic differences to how we make our payments over older methods. There are also a variety of ways in which how we pay is currently changing. The fact is that the ways in which we can pay are constantly changing, whether they become obsolete or are overtaken by a more popular method.
One of the most recent changes came as a result of a decision made by none other than Google and Paypal. With the massive shift into online purchasing, it comes as little surprise that a search engine and online payment method should decide on how you make payments. Recently the pair dropped support for the payment method Maestro. While it’s still unclear as to why this has been decided, it will clearly have an effect on those who use Maestro cards in their day to day purchasing. Already bank card are making changes as a result as many RBS customers are being issued with Visa cards instead.
In another surprising turn the government is looking to get rid of cheque based payments entirely. This proposal has been put forward in order to make cheques unavailable possibly within the next decade. The reason behind this is that basically cheques are becoming obsolete. Far fewer people are using them and far fewer companies are accepting them. It seems to be the case that as purchasing spreads its wings into new areas many services are getting left behind. This could be put down partly to the internet revolution. As ecommerce became more widely available card based payment became far more common and payment providers had to ensure that they chose to allow the most secure and popular methods in transactions.
Payment online is very common now and a multitude of online businesses secure a contract with a payment service provider in order to ensure that their purchases are handled correctly and that their customers are completely secure. Online credit card processing has to be strictly controlled as there are a number of threats online/.
How payment moves forward next remains to be seen, as modern ways of purchasing continue to push forward the payment methods available to us.
