Old is Gold. A cliché, no doubt but football fans beg to differ. Retro Football shirts are as much the rage today as when they first hit the pitch. Everyone, even those with tepid interest in the game, would recall witnessing on telly eager queues of fans pressing in front of auction lines. Not everybody can afford to buy las camisas once worn by Maradonna or Ronaldo, though. Shirts that may not be straight off starry backs but belong to their era may be bought off shopping shelves. The price of these vintage vetements depends on their uncommonness, size, condition, and availability. These vaunted football shirts are not just a fashion statement but heirlooms, an investment.
If you happened to be a Manchester City Football Club fan of the 70s, you are not likely to forget the gorgeous sky blue shirts adorning the likes of Joe Corrigan and Francis Lee. A major favorite is the Umbro-manfactured especially bright and long-sleeved 1977-81 home shirt with a V neck and droopy collars. Very cool and fetching.
While on the subject of football how can we forget Brazil? Who, especially can forget Brazilian greats like Dida, Lucio, and Ronaldo? Small wonder that teenaged fans and their adult counterparts, prefer to wear their loyalties on their sleeve. Just think back to the resplendent days when Zico, Rivelino, and Toninho streaked across the football pitch in gold and you would probably long for the 1978-80 retro home shirt with closed collars in mint green and long golden sleeves. Can you hear the uproar following you as you finger the pristine fabric of its ultra vintage material?
For a breezier look, on the other hand, you might want to don the away shirt (1985-88) worn by the Brazilian boys of yore. Manufactured by Topper you would love its silky feel beneath your fingers even as you recall the grace with which the players lost to France in the World Cup Finals of 1986.
Couture-conscious fans simply dig the French classic 1991-93 Olympique Marseille away shirt sponsored by Panasonic in shimmering azure blue with white stripes on the right shoulder. This ultra-rare blue saga recalls to the mind the brilliant triumph of l’OM over AC Milan, the first French club to ever win the European Cup.
Then there are those who are likely to prefer only match-worn shirts. Owing to their relative paucity they are somewhat expensive and.. . more desirable for that reason. There are quite a few takers, for instance, for the Ray Wilson-worn home shirt of 1964-65. Available for a little over $ 1,500, its dignified appearance with the machine-stitched navy England blue badge and stately collar is as attention-getting as when Wilson had stepped into the pitch with his teammates to beat West Germany in 1966. Donning the medium-sized Football shirts you will feel like a victor, hearing the cheer crescendo in background. Surprised? Don’t be. The feeling is for real. Choices abound; all you need is a discerning eye.
