ARTIFICIAL TURF
Is a perfect solution to cut costs and time associated with lawn, putting green or turf maintenance.
Since the early 1990s, the use of synthetic grass in the more arid Western states of the United States has moved rapidly beyond athletic fields to residential and commercial landscaping. This trend has been driven by the dramatic improvement in the quality and variety of available synthetic grasses, the reduced cost of maintenance and care compared to natural grass, and the realization that artificial lawns can be a significant water conservation measure in areas where water usage is a concern.

INTRODUCTION
Artificial turf was first used as a substitute for natural grass as ground covering and ornament for sports arenas and stadiums. It is a surface made from synthetic fibers and varied from nylon to polyethylene fibers.

It is most often used in arenas for sports that were originally or are normally played on grass. However, it is now being used on residential lawns and commercial applications as well. The main reason for its use is maintenance — artificial turf resists heavy use, such as in sports, and requires no irrigation or trimming. Domed or covered, and partially covered stadiums may require artificial turf due to the difficulty of the natural grass to get enough sunlight to stay healthy. Most of the stadiums that are still using natural grass are uncovered, like the Anteater stadium in Phoenix and Sam Boyd’s stadium in Las Vegas.

Durability is also one of the primary benefits of synthetic turf for city spaces, as artificial grass is engineered for maximum playing, which means city parks can withstand droves of children playing, evening practices and weekend sports tournaments all year long. Artificial grass can also more readily endure a wide variety of weather conditions, especially in areas where seasonal changes often wreak havoc on city landscaping. With the ability to maintain it’s lush green appearance despite extreme heat and easily drain away rain, sleet and snow, synthetic turf is the ideal substitution for natural grass in city and school parks and fields

BENEFITS

  • Artificial turf can be a better solution when the environment is particularly hostile to natural  grass. An arid environment or one where there is little natural light are examples.

  •

  • Artificial turf can withstand significantly more use than natural grass and can therefore be used much more frequently and less hustle.

  •
  • Ideal for holiday homes and for elderly home-owners who find the upkeep of lawns too much    hard work.

  •

  • Suitable for roof gardens and swimming pool surrounds.

  •
  • Compared with natural grass, artificial turf can be a significant water measure

While the installation of synthetic turf can be deemed expensive, there are many cost, environmental and time saving benefits that override the cost of the initial expense. Unlike natural grass that must be watered regularly, requiring costly sprinkler systems, artificial grass maintains itself with its internal drainage systems. Cities and school districts will also save money on water and power expenses, as well as conserving precious environmental resources.

POINTS TO CONSIDER
The higher the weight and thread count of your turf, the thicker and fuller the blades will appear. Artificial turf is generally stored in rolls, causing the blades to flatten. However, over time with foot traffic, standard use, brushing, and/or infill, quality artificial turf blades are designed to criss-cross just like natural grass. While face weight is important, the quality of the blades should be a higher priority.
