Colon cancer is a vicious tumor that emerges within the inner wall of the large intestine. Colon cancer may develop from polyps and its early removal can prevent from the cancer. Cancer is an alteration of the normal cells, causing them to grow and multiply at an abnormal rate. If not treated on-time, it may spread further affecting other parts of the body such as lungs, liver, bones, and brain. This cancer is also termed as colorectal cancer when the rectum (end area of colon) is also affected.

According to the American Cancer Society, around 112,000 people yearly get affected with colon cancer and 41,000 by rectal cancer, making it the 3rd leading cancer killer in U.S among men and fourth in women. Usually the symptoms of colon cancer may not be detected at an early stage, but you should definitely get yourself a safety check if facing the following:

·          Bowel fluctuations, including consistent diarrhea or constipation

·          Rectal bleeding

·          Blood in your body waste/stool

·          Frequent abdomen irritation in the form of contractions, gas, or stomach ache

·          Weakness and exhaustion with continuous weight loss

Following can be a few causes of colon cancer:

·          Smoking, extensive alcohol, and drugs intake greatly increase colon cancer risks.

·          Your personal or family medical history may make you vulnerable towards colon cancer.

·          Food intake that is high in fats and low in fiber can also be a factor

·          Older people, usually above 50, are more likely to develop colon cancer than youngsters

HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is an emerging treatment for colon cancer. A study showed that HRT is capable enough to protect against colon cancer, which is diagnosed in 1 out of every 17 people in the US, making it the third-leading cancer killer of women after lung and breast cancer.

The American Association for Cancer Research stated that HRT proved to be beneficial in lowering the potential risks of colorectal cancer. Women who adopted the HRT medications showed a decreased occurrence rate of cancer as compared to the ones not using the medication. It has been verified that HRT in the form of estrogen only or combined with progestin show tremendously positive results in curing colon cancer.

To prevent colon cancer, regular screening may be a good precautionary measure. But if it has been detected at a later stage then HRT can greatly help. To know more about HRT and how it can reduce the risks of colon cancer, please consult LA Health & Rejuvenation Center.
