Using A Glass Scratch Remover At Home

You might want to start by trying a few substances that you probably have around the house. If those do not work, there are commercial products. The last solution, of course, is to consult with the people where you purchased the glasses.

Glass Scratch Removers Found in Household Products
There are common household products that you can use to try to fix the scratches. Toothpaste, making sure it is paste, not gel, helps reduce the effect of the scratch. Dab just a little on the scratched surface. Gently rub with a soft cloth for a few minutes. Rinse with soap and warm water. Repeat if necessary.

Another option for a glass scratch remover is a paste of dry mustard and vinegar in equal amounts. Apply to the scratch on a dry surface and rub gently to try to smooth the irregularity. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, as the mustard can be a major irritant for your eyes if it is not completely removed.

Other household products that are slightly abrasive might help smooth the edges of a scratch making it less of an annoyance. These include cleansing powders and baking soda. Some people have had success with furniture polish, rubbing alcohol, or baby oil. Silver polish has produced good results for other people looking for a good product to remove glass scratches.

Whatever product you decide to try, first wash and dry the glass lens thoroughly. Be very gentle with the agent you rub onto the scratch. Rinse off thoroughly so there is no residue. You might have to repeat the process several times to see any results. None of these products will renew the lens totally. The best you can hope for is a noticeable improvement both in your vision and the look of the lens.

Commercial Remedies
There are a few commercial products that might help, some made specifically for eye lenses and others for different purposes. There is a polymer-based formula that has been used successfully in two steps. First, the lens is thoroughly cleaned. Then, the treatment product works at levelling the edges of surface scratches and conforming to the shape of the lens. It dries to a clear finish that no one will notice and should not affect your vision.

Cerium oxide is a polishing compound that can be used to reduce the depth of the scratch and smooth the edges. This is often used by optical companies but can be ordered to try at home. This is a chemical agent that requires careful handling.

Cautions When Using Glass Scratch Removers
You might not want to try removing a scratch at home if it is top deep as you might change the curvature of the lens. This would actually change the prescription formula and affect your vision. Also, if your glasses have an anti glare coating, it might be mostly the coating that is affected. In this case, it would be best to consult with a professional, instead of trying to use a glass scratch remover at home.
