What To Do To Avoid Overeating

People tend to overeat because of a lot of poor eating habits. Some eat in large containers, some eat food too fast, while some eat while doing something else. All these boil down to the fact that they lose track of the amount of food they've eaten. Listed are some simple tips to avoid overeating.

Everybody is guilty of overeating at one point in their lives. We all have faulty eating habits that lead us to lose track of the amount of food we eat. Some people are guilty of gulping food down so fast that they don't even notice that they're eating a big serving of food. Some just keep popping food into their mouth while they watch TV or catch a movie in the cinema. There are ways to avoid overeating, here are some simple tips:

  1. Learn to discern. Hunger is different from cravings. When you're hungry, it means your body has used up its nourishment. If you're only craving for something, it means that it's a momentary urge to eat a specific food. Cravings pass easily. If you feel a hunger pang come on, give it 30 seconds to a minute. It's rare for cravings to stay longer than a minute. If you still feel the need to eat, chances are, your body is telling you to eat.
  2. Chew well. Chew your food thoroughly. Not only does it aid in better digestion, it also gives your brain enough time to process how much you've eaten and tell you once you've had enough. If you eat too fast, you lose track of how much you've stuffed down your throat. It can also cause constipation and malabsorption of nutrients from the food you ate.
  3. Think little. Eat in smaller portions distributed within the day. You get to moderate the amount you eat, and at the same time you get to properly supply your body with enough energy for the day. Also, it would be a good idea to put snacks in smaller containers so that you can limit the amount you snack on.
  4. Avoid distractions. Don't eat in front of the TV or while working. You'll be distracted too much and lose sight of the amount you've eaten. If you must eat while watching or working, bring only the amount of food you need to eat. Don't bring the entire serving platter with you.

A lot of people suddenly just wake up finding themselves overweight because of poor eating habits. It's about time we develop better eating habits to get to the path of living healthy.
