The house, the mirror of the people who inhabit it

This might seem a cliché, but we must admit that the house reveals a lot of the people who live in. A person that notably cares about the environment, for example, would probably use eco-friendly colors; if the house belongs to a very sunny and open person, the main colors of walls and curtains would probably be very warm; a house with a minimal style, and no frills, will probably reflect a precise and neat person. We could go on and make numberless examples of this kind, but you only need to think about the houses of your relatives and friends to realize that at least some features or rooms of their houses is in some way similar to them.

Houses are also a sort of presentation of their inhabitants: if a person enters your house for the first time, a person that you have not been knowing for al long time, or that you are used to meet only in given contexts, for example at work, s/he will most probably try and gather some information about you from the way you keep your house - perhaps s/he will do that unconsciously – to understand something more about your personality and temper. This is why it is important that your house reflects what you are, or at least that it reflects your qualities!

If you want your house to mirror your personality, it is sometimes necessary to make a little effort: use your creativity and goodwill and go to a DIY store to buy everything you might need to turn your house into a place in your own image. When you furnish a house the risk is that of making it resemble a furniture catalog: nice, tidy, with the right combinations of furniture, carpets, curtains, furnishings and ornaments, but terribly impersonal and cold. To avoid such an effect, you need to be brave and try to go beyond catalogs.

To make a summary of the useful tips to personalize a house a whole encyclopedia would not be enough, but here are some suggestions suitable for everybody. First of all, the walls of the rooms can be considered as canvas that you can use to express your creativity and your personality. Paintings and posters can tell a lot of your aptitudes and tastes, but if you wish to make something original you can apply wall stickers: you can find many types of stickers on the market, and they are all customizable depending on your tastes. Another tip for furniture: be not afraid to modify it. You could buy not too expensive furniture, to experiment with no regrets. Use rush colors to give a touch of old to a new table or make use of your knowledge of decoupage to decorate a wood piece of furniture. A third tip: do not ignore any room, not even the bathroom. You can leave your mark also in less important rooms, both with simple tricks (the colors of the shower curtain and of bath towels, candles, lights …) and with bigger works (Turkish bath, cromotherapy …).

In conclusion, the last tip, but the most important one: do not put a check on your imagination and do not be afraid to experiment!
