For thousands of years, DIY home security meant walking very softly and carrying a big stick. Then, less than a hundred years ago, home security meant hiring a lot of very expensive specialists - first to wire your security system in place and then people to complain to when your security system didn't work. Now, you can do it all yourself with the help of your PC acting as a home security video monitor.
Small Cameras, Big Results
When wireless technology became more affordable and more versatile, people began realizing that many devices could be hooked up through your computer. If you wanted a security camera twenty years ago, you not only needed the camera, but wiring, a VCR and a home security video monitor (which looks exactly like a television).
But now, when you buy a small indoor security camera, you usually also buy membership onto an exclusive website, run by either the camera manufacturer or the software that the camera can interface with. You then log on to the website in order to see the images that your security camera is transmitting to the website. Depending on the security camera, your computer, cell phone or PDA can become a home security video monitor.
Your home security video monitor doesn't need to take up the entire screen. You can make the image into a small window to glance into frequently while you're doing other work. Granted, you may not be able to do this when you use your cell phone of PDA as a home security video monitor. It depends on your cell phone or PDA's capabilities. But, with a PC or laptop, you'd be able to work and peek at the same time.
Everyday Uses
Even though the cost of an indoor security camera has plummeted over the last ten years, it's still a sizeable chunk of change, wearing at least a three figure price tag. You want to be sure that you not only really need a security camera, but also have unrestricted access to your cell phone or whatever you are using for a home security video monitor.
You can keep an eye on small children, sleeping babies, elderly loved ones, people with Alzheimer's, or even keep an eye on a suspected cheating spouse (if they don't know that you are using your PC as a home security video monitor, that is). There are also many reasons that animal lovers may need a home security video camera.
