What is rate limit?
Most hosting email account providers allow users to send email by using
the webmail browser interface or by using a SMTP connection with the
email account SMTP server. No matter the way you send the emails (from
web interface or email client software), you must be aware of the “rate
limit” (the limit for sending emails per day) established by your email
account provider, especially when you act bulk email marketing. It is
always a good idea to contact your email account provider and ask about
the email send rate, before proceeding with a mass email campaign.
Sample rate limit values
The following restrictions apply for Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo.
Gmail email send limit – no more than 500 recipients per message for
the Gmail web interface, or max 100 recipients if you are using an email
client software.
Hotmail email send limit – no more than 100 recipients per day.
Yahoo Mail email send limit – no more than 100 emails or recipients per hour
The rate limit for popular hosting providers such as rackspace allows
2000 emails per day. If you need to send more than 2000 emails per day,
you need to use some third party solution for your bulk email
marketing.
Solution to overcome rate limit
The best solution we recommend is sendgrid. We used sendgrid to send 37000 emails per day from our bulk email marketing software, Email Marketing Software Express and works really well.
Once you ran Email Marketing Software Express campaign, just logon to
sendgrid and view email reports(opened, bounced, etc). Sendgrid also send
weekly statistics about your campaign by email with complete reports.
