Reorganize Finances Sooner Than Later

Oakland is facing some tough times still. The recession is far from over and Oakland bankruptcy attorneys are doing much more business this year than last. While business for Oakland bankruptcy attorneys has increased quite a bit, which is good for them, it still shows that there is a long way to go in righting the local and national economy. Oakland bankruptcy attorneys are seeing the human toll up close and personal. Some of the clients they are seeing in their offices are relatives, friends and neighbors.

Many of the people lining the offices of the attorneys are in shock over their finances. Until recently they had been solid, bill paying citizens. They had met their mortgage payments, their credit card payments and maybe even had a little left over for their IRA.

Then disaster struck as it has done so for so many in this recession. Perhaps they lost a job. Or there was an unexpected medical or repair bill. Or, worse, both. Then they were on a slide downhill to disaster in their finances.

Often they wait too long to try to do anything about it. Hope springs eternal and they think that they can somehow muddle through and things will turn around. That does happen for some, but for most it is a slope that leads to a crash. Financially speaking.

Then they need professional help to reorganize their finances. Then they seek out an attorney.

Finding an attorney is not hard. Finding one that meets your needs and who will communicate with you about them is a little harder. It is not impossible, however, and is well worth the search.

Start the search by talking to relatives and friends. It might surprise you how many have had to reorganize their finances. If that proves fruitless, then search out names on the Internet. Most attorneys have detailed web sits describing their services and backgrounds.

Once you have retained an attorney you may be advised to file Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 consumer bankruptcy. Chapter 7 has you selling assets and repaying creditors. Chapter 13 has you keeping some assets and setting up a schedule to repay those you owe. Your advice may even be more conservative: get a second job and talk to creditors outside of court to settle accounts.

No matter what the approach, the best advice is not to wait. The sooner you get started on reorganizing your finances the better your life will become.
