It does matter how people view you at work, as much as we would like to think that it doesn't. If you are viewed poorly, then you can get into trouble just because you are not liked. You may lose promotions because of it. You may have a harder time just getting through your day if you are not respected and treated poorly. And of course you may feel like an outsider in a high school when all the 'cool' coworkers shun you when you try and talk to them. The impressions you may at work are extremely important when it comes to your career, and even when it comes to your mental health.
You may be an introvert, and you may not want to socialize with a lot of people - and that's okay. People don't necessarily care about whether you want to be part of the loud group or not. What you should do when you are that shy though is be pleasant when approached, and talk to others when work calls for conversation. This will set you up to look like the nice person who does their work, but doesn't like to socialize. You will be respected for who you are and left alone, and you will most likely enjoy your days at work.
On the other hand, if you are a shy person who doesn't respond well to others when they talk to you, then you can come across as rude and arrogant. So make sure to be pleasant when talked to, but do not engage in personal talk if you don't want to because it will be expected of you from then on, and the minute you don't do it you become rude.
If you like to socialize at work then make sure you are not a negative person while doing so. There are many people who get through the work day by complaining - all day. These people are not viewed as hard workers, but instead they are seen for what they really are, which are slackers that try to look like they are doing something by complaining about it. The thing is that it's kind of hard to work when you are complaining. But the great thing is it's hard to complain while you are actually working!
Being a positive worker is one of the best things you can do to gain the respect of everyone around you, and to be liked. People tend to look at you fonder when you take your work seriously, but you are happy while doing so. People respect you, even if they don't say it to you, and they talk good about you behind your back when your name comes up. It's hard to find something bad about a positive worker. You literally become a role model for other people. They want to be happy at work like you, and they want to feel fulfilled while being so happy - like you.
As a final note, if you hate your job then you are never going to be happy, positive, and well liked at it. If you spend your day feeling negative it probably shows in some way. Even if you think you are not coming across as negative it may still be radiating off of you. So do what you love with no exceptions. Life is meant to be fun, and work is a big part of life.

Hey, Stop Snoozing Over There!May 8, 2011 - 9:07:14 AM We lead lives filled with bells and whistles. Unfortunately, they aren't the kind that mean upgrades! Instead, I'm referring to the constant alerts that sound during our day starting with the alarm clock in the morning signaling that a new day has begun to the wristband alert at night reminding us to take our medication. The good news is that these alerts help us remember to do all the things we need to get done each day. Unfortunately, there's a "bad news" part too.... [Read the full story] |

Which Books To Keep? - Making Really Hard ChoicesMar 20, 2011 - 3:55:47 PM When I downsized to a small cottage about six years ago, I had to pare down the number of books I owned. This was a huge issue for me. I'm a book fanatic. All hope is lost when I walk into a bookstore. We're talking hundreds of dollars a visit. In fact, if I have less than 15 books scattered around the house waiting to be read, I get nervous!... [Read the full story] |
