Ship lovers and ship model collectors feel proud to own HMS victory models that are small replicas of the original, 104 gun, first rate ship of the line of Royal Navy. The ship is world famous as Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. After serving as a harbor ship for nearly a decade, it was moved to the dry dock at Portsmouth and preserved as a museum ship. HMS Victory models are a great reminder of the oldest naval ship still in commission.

HMS Victory Models: Why are they Popular?
HMS Victory models are one of the most popular ship models. These models act as a reminder of the glory and magnificence of the huge ship that was built at Chatham Dockyard. The HMS Victory was launched in 1765 but commissioned only in 1778, when France signed a treaty of cooperation with the US. The ship was made the flagship of Admiral Sir Augustus Keppel’s Channel Fleet. The HMS Victory was built by using around 6,000 trees, 90% of which were oak and the remaining were elm, pine, fir and Lignum Vitae.  The basic dimensions of this ship are: 151'3"5/8 × 51'10" × 21'6".
Its tonnage is 2162 22/94.

This historic ship participated in several battles, such as:
  • The First Battle of Ushant in 1778
  • The Second Battle of Ushant in 1781
  • The Battle of Cape Spartel in 1782
  • The Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797
  • The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805

HMS Victory served as the flagship of the Commander in Chief at Portsmouth, from 1824 onwards. The models of this ship are quite popular because of its role in the various famous battles. The ship also received her last battle wound in 1941, during World War II, when a German bomb exploded in her dry dock.

The ship has been repaired from time to time, with the first repairs carried out in 1800. The ship is still in commission as the flagship of the Second Sea Lord, in his role as the Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy’s Home Command. The popularity and the historical significance of this ship are evident from the thousands of visitors that continue to visit it in the museum.

HMS Victory has witnessed significant wear and tear and its hull requires significant repairs. The UK government has now decided to award a contract to private players to carry out extensive repairs on the ship from 2011 onwards.

HMS Victory models also remind us of another ship that was built in 1937 (prior to the ship that is still in existence) as the most powerful warship in the Royal Navy. The ship, part of a fleet commanded by war hero Admiral John Balchin and was reported to have mysteriously sunk in 1744. All the people on the board disappeared in the sea. Ship wreckage company, Odyssey, claimed in 2009 that it had recovered the remains of the HMS Victory. HMS Victory models are a great reminder of the role played by the two warships and the stories associated with them.
