When
we think about rugby, we often think of a sport being played by more
than a dozen players on the field giving each other a blow in order
to get the ball into the other side of the field. We don’t think
about other versions such as union, league and other forms of rugby
out there let alone spot the difference. We think rugby and others
are one and the same.
So,
let us spot the difference and learn it while we are at it. Team size
is the first difference that we can spot. The typical rugby team only
consists of 15 men playing on the field while there are 7 reserves on
the sideline. The typical league team consists of 13 players with 4
reserves. This means that the league team is smaller than the
standard rugby team.
There
usually is an interchange system operated for a rugby league with
reserve players and this allows for a maximum of 10 changes
throughout the entire game. On the other hand, the standard rugby
game play, once the player gets off the field he cannot return to the
game anymore but like any rule there are also two exceptions to this
simple rule.
Of
course, the rules may not be same with other forms of the game such
as in the youth rugby
league but basically the goals of the game are the same.
Furthermore, there is also a difference in the scoring such as points
in a try, conversion, penalty and field goal. Standard rugby has 5
points in tries, 2 points in conversion and 3 points for field goal
and penalty.
In
a standard rugby league club,
on the other hand, has 4 points in a try, 2 points in both conversion
and field goal and 1 point for a field goal. There is also a big
difference in the scrums and line outs of the game. In a rugby game,
scrum is primarily contested by two opposing teams and has more
people participating in the scrum.
In
a rugby league, it is the complete opposite because the scrum is
hardly contested and has less players contesting and participating.
Perhaps, there will also be changes in the youth
rugby league but how the game is played is essentially the same.
