Romantic getaways and candlelight dinners - Some snub it, some wait for it and others avoid it, but S. Valentine’s is an occasion to show off all the gallantry and the romanticism you can; and even though for someone it lately changed into a mere commercial feast, it’s an ancient event and a tradition to be honoured.
The festivity dedicated to S. Valentine’s was
instituted by pope Gelasius I. The saint to whom it was dedicated had been
particularly close to lovers: among the stories about him, it is told that one
day, seeing a couple of young lovers quarrelling, he went near to them and
handed them a rose, inviting the young couple to keep it in their hands; once
they did it, their argument suddenly came to an end. It may not be a miracle
with great special effects, but it is probably told to remind that love itself is
a little daily miracle: in fact, just imagining that two different people with
different opinions, habits and origins can live together sharing everything is
somehow miraculous. So here it is, S. Valentine, patron saint of lovers: as he
does every year, he makes the romantic part hidden even in the most bearish
lover come out: where could you ever celebrate it then, if not in Verona?
Indissolubly tied to one of the most beloved and
renowned love stories in the world, to celebrate S. Valentine’s Verona is the
perfect city. Wandering under Juliet’s balcony anyone will feel inspired, and
the remembrance of the unlucky but enormous love of the two youngsters wafts in
the streets of the whole city. So, luckily, we can realize how lovers’ life has
become easier nowadays: thinking not only of Romeo and Juliet, that have not
been allowed to live enough not even to have their first discussion, but also
to Orpheus, that looked for his beloved one in the underworld singing “what
shall I do without my Eurydice” and playing his lira, or to Hamlet and Ophelia,
who lived their tragically unlucky love, we can peacefully smile while choosing
roses, music and menu, because in hotels and restaurants S. Valentine’s present
and celebrated with marvelous candlelight nights and all S. Valentine’s
package’s wonders.
The city as well, in its own way, dedicates itself to
lovers and for S. Valentine’s various kinds of events do not lack: for Verona
in Love the city dresses up. It turns on its lights and sprinkles its squares
with confetti, creating a special atmosphere for anyone who wishes to live it;
moreover, it opens the doors of Juliet’s house, on which external walls lovers
traditionally leave a note or write a love message. This and other initiatives
will be especially organized for the lover’s week-end: S. Valentine’s offers
are perfect occasions for a romantic getaway.
Thinking carefully, the famous 14th
February, in which the saint who dedicated himself to love is remembered, is
nothing more than an occasion to celebrate the fact of being in love; and if
you are, you can find lots of reasons to celebrate, and every occasion is good
to remind you how happy you are.
