The campaign “Vacanze Sicure 2012” (Safe holiday
2012), which is meant to enhance road safety and reduce accidents in Italy, has
just been presented.
With summer approaching, the alarm for road safety
goes off: in summer, indeed, the number of car accidents increase a lot. The
Italian national campaign “Vacanze Sicure 2012” (Safe holiday 2012), presented
by the Director of Traffic Police Service of Lombardy Compartment
Tommaso Cacciapaglia and by the Director of Assogomma Fabio Bertolotti, is
meant to increase the control on tyres and in general to enhance road safety,
reducing in this way the number of car accidents.
The increase in the number of car accidents in summer
is nothing new, and this is due to many different causes: obviously the holiday
or trip departures make the number of circulating vehicles increase – and some
of these vehicles are driven by people that do not usually drive, or at least
not for long journeys – and consequently the probabilities to make an accident
multiply. When they are on holiday some people might also tend to drink a bit
more and then drive, which might be very dangerous. Also tiredness, especially
if you drive for many kilometres to reach your travel destination, can be one
of the causes of car accidents. Besides all these variables, there might be
also other factors, which are connected to the state of vehicles and especially
of tyres.
It is above all to control the conditions of tyres and
the respect of other safety regulations (the use of baby car seats and of
safety belts, for example) that the Italian campaign “Vacanze Sicure 2012” has
been organized. The initiative will focus on the roads of three Italian regions
(one in the north, Lombardy, one in the south, Campania, and an island,
Sicily), which gather almost 30% of Italian traffic.
In these three regions the
controls of traffic police will be intensified, while in all the other regions
the controls will go on as usual. The traffic police members that will be
involved in the campaign will monitor the use of safety belts, the efficiency
of vehicles and above all the state of tyres. In order to make their controls
as accurate as possible, the traffic police have been trained by Assogomma to
be able to check tyre makings and homologation (only homologated tyres ensure
compliance with the safety requirements imposed by the European
Union) and more in general their conditions.
The routine checks carried out by
the Traffic Police often show that many vehicles have worn, damage or deflated
tyres, a problem that should not be underestimated, as the use of bad tyres can
be the cause of many accidents. Moreover, using damaged tyres or tyres that do
not have the right pressure, you can have disadvantages not only as far as road
safety is concerned, but also in terms of fuel consumption: with deflated tyres
car consume more (which is bad for the environment but also for your wallet)
and you need to change them more often. For this reason it is advisable to
constantly control the state of tyres: in Italy there are over 50,000 tyre
repairers that make free tyre checks.
