Why do Diets Fail?

Anyone who has ever tried to stay with a diet program knows it can be very difficult.   Most people will try and quit many times before they find a program or diet that works for them.   There are many reasons why diets fail but the most important thing is to not get discouraged.   In this article I will highlight some of the major reasons that diets fail, and by knowing them you will be better able to avoid them in the future.

When starting a diet or program try to choose something you can see yourself enjoying.  I know this sounds strange but it makes sense.   Don’t choose a program that has you eat more meat I you don’t enjoy meat.   You will hate the diet, and there is little chance of sticking with it and getting results.   The same goes exercise; don’t jog if you hate doing it.   Pick another more enjoyable activity, maybe riding a bike or swimming.   When a program is selected that contains things you enjoy you will have a much better time and likely see better results.

Another reason why diets fail is because goals get set too high.  Often people want to lose weight because of an event coming up.   Maybe you want to drop fifteen pounds for a wedding coming up in a week.   That is unrealistic, and could be a bit dangerous if you were able to do it.   While it is important to have a target weight in mind it shouldn’t be part of your weekly goals.   It is far too easy to get discouraged by not losing the amount of weight you wanted and miss the fact that you are losing weight.

Motivation and seeing success for yourself is often overlooked.   Staying motivated can be hard to do especially for individuals who are looking to lose weight at an unreasonable rate.   It is very important to keep in mind that you are changing habits about yourself that took years to form.   Visualize yourself at your goal weight and remember that this image of your self is 100% attainable.

Slipping up is not the end of the world.   So you had a bad day and ate some things you would rather not mention.   A few too many beverages and if you went jogging your head may explode.   Then you start to feel you’ve failed, you’re back to your old ways.   That’s where you’re wrong, so you messed up just jump right back in.   So many diets fail this way and it’s just a waste, a mess up here and there is normal just don’t give up.

There are many reasons why diets fail and it is important to recognize them and keep on going.   Enjoying what you eat, setting realistic goals, keeping yourself motivated, and sticking to your diet even after a slip up are all great ways to keep from failing at your diet.  Know that not every plan is for every person, if it feels like a punishment research more and find something that better fits you.
