What kind of dentist or dental specialist should you go to? Many people are not aware there are many dental specialists who are trained specifically to care for unique oral health problems. How do you choose who to go to for your specific needs?

San Antonio, TX. March 2012. Dental specialists have to complete at least another two years of training in addition to their basic training. They focus their attention to specific skills in the dental field. A general dentist may offer specialty treatment on top of their many other procedures and are held to the same standard of care as a specialist. It is up to you to ask questions and do your due diligence before accepting any specialized treatment from any general dentist or dental specialist. Always ask questions and don't hesitate to ask for references!  Specialized care can be scary and expensive so it's important that you find the right dentist for your specific needs.

Below is a general overview and list of specialists with brief descriptions that may help you find the dentist you need:

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons specialize in surgeries such as removal of wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, jaw re-alignment, placing dental implants, removal of tumors and cysts, bone grafting and more.

Periodontists specialize in treatment of gum disease, gingivitis, gum tissue grafting, bone grafting, placing dental implants and more.

Prosthodontists specialize in dentures and restoration of broken or missing teeth. Prosthodontists are highly skilled in taking impressions and fitting crowns, bridges and dentures and even implant retained prostheses.

Endodontists focus on optimal root canal therapy and often use the best and latest technology in treating the nerves and vessels inside the tooth. They may also perform other treatments related to the root of the tooth such as removing a tip of a root or amputating a root from a tooth that has multiple roots.

Orthodontists specialize and are highly trained in correcting the alignment of teeth and jaws by using devices such as braces, retainers, guides and other special devices.

Pediatric Dentists specialize in treatment for children and focus on preventative care, having been trained to recognize signs of disease, decay, crowding or early symptoms of other potential problems.

General Dentists and Cosmetic Dentists perform many common procedures such as fillings, cleanings, teeth whitening, preventative care and more. Some general dentists also offer specialized treatments.
