Guide wheels and tracks are easy enough to replace but unless you know what you are doing, replacing springs can be dangerous. One of the most common garage door repair jobs is the replacement of the tension springs that assist in the manual or automatic opening and closing of the door. The springs take most of the weight off the door making it easier to open by hand as well as helping the opener motor do its job.
Extension springs are the easiest and safest for the homeowner to change on their own, as they usually involve the need for a little understanding on how they work to affect the garage door repair. On the other hand, torsion springs, coiled at the top of the door, are under a lot of stress and tension and can be dangerous for an inexperienced person to attempt to replace or repair them.
If the garage door repair involves changing torsion springs, it is probably wise to let someone who knows what they are doing make this repair. Additionally, some companies will not sell torsion springs direct to consumers due to the dangers involved in replacing them.
Other Repairs Can Be Much Simpler
If the garage door repair does not involve springs, there is a good chance the home owner can affect these repairs on their own. The lift bracket fastened to the bottom of the door for example, is another piece of garage door hardware that often goes bad due mainly to its position at the bottom of the door.
Snow and rain often accumulates near the bottom and can cause rust to eat away at this plate to which one end of the door's cable is attached. Performing this garage door repair can be as easy as removing the old plate, usually held in place by four bolts, and replacing it. However, the wood at which the plate attaches may also need to be replaced as part of this garage door repair.
