Flower girls have a long history as members of the wedding party, with some scholars dating their participation back to Roman times, when young girls carried sheaves of grain before the bride and groom in an effort to ensure the couple’s fertility.
Today, it’s a good bet flower girls will be carrying baskets of blooms or strewing blossoms rather than toting bundles of wheat, but one aspect has remained the same: as a member of the wedding party, flower girls need to be relaxed and focused throughout the ceremony, to help ensure your day is as magical as it ought to be.
In most cases, the flower girl is a young relative or family friend of the bride or groom, usually between four and 10 years old. Some couples choose flower girls under four years of age, but most wedding planners advise choosing older girls to avoid many of the pitfalls that can plague especially young children, including confusion, nervousness, and downright crankiness.
Like other members of your bridal party, your flower girl’s ensemble can be tailored to complement your wedding theme. Be sure to choose a dress that is comfortable and that is not too long to avoid fidgeting or tripping while walking down the aisle. In addition to a dress, other items you’ll need to consider include shoes, color-coordinated sashes, headpieces and, of course, the basket.
Baskets
While some flower girls may carry small bouquets that coordinate with the bridal flowers, many brides and grooms opt for a basket to hold flowers or loose petals that can be strewn in the aisle before the bridal party. If you’re considering a basket, your options can run from simple wicker containers to more elaborate pieces. No matter which you choose, there’s a style to suit your wedding. Many flower girl baskets are embellished with bows or ribbons that are colored in shades to coordinate with the bridal party attire.
The Love Knot Collection Flower Girl Basket and Lovely Lace Flower Girl Basket are good examples. Both baskets are covered in satin, in either white or ivory, and feature coordinating bows. The Lovely Lace basket also features a covering of chantilly lace and an organza bow underlay, for an added touch of romance. For more contemporary style, the Monogram Collection Flower Girl Basket, with layers of satin and organza ribbon and rhinestone accents is a good choice, as is the Splendor Flower Girl Basket, with bold ribbons and rhinestone accents.
Shoes
Selecting comfortable shoes is a must for every member of the wedding party, and is especially crucial for the youngest member of your group, when tight or pinching shoes can cause frustration and even tears.
Choose shoes from a reputable bridal supplier where specialists understand the need for comfort, as well as style. Ballet flats like the Olivia style are a popular and traditional choice, and their low profile makes them especially appropriate for very young flower girls. Turn up the heat on the traditional flat with a style like Blossom, which features flowery fabric and perky toe-top rosettes. Looking for dyeable choices? Betsy is another popular option, with a slim ankle strap and just a hint of a heel. Or select a sandal style, like traditional Cara or more contemporary Carly, featuring a double heel and a pearl rosette accent. For older girls who don’t need the security of a strap, consider a slip-on like Maggie, embellished with rows of rhinestones.
Sashes
Offering a splash of color that coordinates with the bridesmaids’ attire, sashes are usually offered in satin or organza fabrics in the same wide variety of shades as other bridal attire. Options include floral fabrics, or beaded embellishments. Most bows offer a self tie option, and can be worn with the tie in the back in the front off to the side.
Headpieces
Like other accessories, headpieces are offered in a range of styles to complement your wedding theme. Popular tiara styles include sweet floral options featuring a twisted wire silk flower crown that can be worn alone or with a small veil. A more contemporary version is a mini tiara featuring sparkling rhinestones. Floral wreaths are more traditional options that can work for any type of ceremony, from casual to formal. For a more streamlined appearance, headbands are another great option, especially when hair is not pulled back. A slim band accented by a single bloom, for example, can be dyed to coordinate with your bridal party’s attire.
Your flower girl may be the smallest member of your bridal party, but there’s no reason she can’t make a big statement. With a little careful planning, your flower girl can be comfortable, cute, and stylish.
