Bridal Fantasies –Trends in Wedding Lehengas
The bridal lehenga has certainly come places in the past few years. Its gone a long way from the traditional aari, dabka and gota work to Swarovski crystals, intricate naqshi work and tapered cuts .
The fact that cuts are the hallmark of the latest trends in bridal lehengas , was quite evident at the Bride & Groom show which was held in the capital recently , and showcased some of the finest in bridal wear for this season .
It’s the cut that has definitely become more modern this year , the skirt of the lehenga is less flared, more fitted, and accentuates the figure.
The modern Indian bride is also learning to experiment with new cuts for the cholis , which is can either be a tiny bustier, covered by a
sheer blouse or a daring backless one worn with a long jacket. Jackets or fitted corsets seem to be doing really well , says Nikki Mahajan , a designer , who is currently working on her new bridal collection .
Even a traditional designer like Ritu Kumar , who has been known for her work with zardozi and old traditional embroideries, has created an eclectic mix of modern and traditional this wedding season. Whats new in bridal trends today , says Ritu , is not just the cuts but also the colours . The modern brides are now moving away from the conventional reds and maroons . Ritu has done an entire line in pastels, including unusual colours like beige and khaki. Giving in to current traditions, Ritu¡¦s new line has many sheer fabrics, with cholis in sheer net matching with co-ordinated organza odhnis .
This wedding season, Delhi has a plethora of lehengas to suit every budget, taste and figure , be it at Kaaya, the designer store for women in South Extension , which has a range of bridal lehengas ranging from Rs. 5,000/- onwards to the sky is the limit ; or at Frontier Bazaar in Karol Bagh, where the bridal lehenga range begins from Rs. 4,000/- and goes upwards till Rs. 50,000/- also. The trend even here has shifted towards sheer fabrics,
and a completely co-ordinated look for the bridal lehenga. Though, reds and
maroons are still a popular item, not so traditional colours like peach, blue or
green are becoming immensely popular amongst their clientele. Similarly, CTC Plaza, near Ashram Chowk, Maharani Bagh offers pure crepe, satin and silk lehengas, including beautiful creations in Manipuri silk from Rs. 1,700/-onwards.
Ultimately, whatever your budget for the wedding lehenga, you can be sure that style, comfort and ethnic chic is the flavour of the wedding season. So don’t be afraid to assert your own bridal elegance for this once –in –lifetime occasion in your life .
