Philadelphia Deserves This World Series Victory

It has been twenty-five years now since Philadelphia has witnessed and celebrated a championship from the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and 76ers. The Phillies are now one win away from ending that drought.

   For the Philadelphia Phillies players, they are win one away from a World Series Victory, but to the fans, the Phillies are one win away from Philadelphia's first championship victory in twenty-five years.Twenty-five years is a very long time. Twenty-five hard fought years involving times of excitement and far more times of disappointment. Over the course of this time, young children became parents and teenagers could of possibly became grandparents. Since the last championship parade along Broadway Street, four Presidents have been in office and with the presidential election around the corner, Philadelphia fans want to keep that number of presidents in office at four during this drought in Philadelphia.

   In the world of sports since a Philadelphia pro-sports team won a championship, Mike Tyson became the youngest world heavy-weight boxing champion,  Jerry Rice caught 1,549 passes, Barry Bonds hit 762 home runs, Michael Jordan scored 32,292 points, and "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky tallied in 894 goals. The Chicago Bulls won three straight NBA Championships two different times, the San Francisco 49ers won four Superbowls, the Edmonton Oilers were victorious in five different Stanley Cup finals, and the New York Yankees won the World Series four different times.

   Philadelphia has witnessed many strong playoff runs, but getting to the championship and winning that final series has been the big problem. Since 1983, the Flyers have advanced to three Stanley cups, the 76ers advanced to one NBA Finals, the Eagles advanced to one Superbowl, and the Phillies advanced to two MLB World Series. Not to mention, the Eagles lost three straight NFC Championship games (2002-2004) before finally advancing to the Superbowl in 2005, but coming up short 24-21 in a close game against the New England Patriots.

   Philadelphia is #1 at something, #1 at losing that is. In the fall of 2005, Philadelphia became the city with four pro-sports teams to go the longest time without a championship victory (1983-2005) since the NBA started. That time span was a little longer then 22 years, breaking the 22-year-long championship drought for the city of Chicago (1963-1985). Many fans believe it is the curse of William Penn, some believe it is the case of weak owners, others believe the refs have it in for Philadelphia, and some believe it could be the cause of fan negativity when these teams lose. This could possibly be the cause of the Philadelphia fans bad reputation at times. Twenty-five years of experiencing the ups and downs and never witnessing a championship victory may be the reason for angered and depressed fans after devastating losses. Philadelphia fans have experienced to many devastating loses since 1983 which can take a toll on the die-hard, dedicated sports fan.

   When a player, that is now playing for the Philadelphia pro-sports team that may end the drought for Philadelphia, was not even born since the last championship-win in Philadelphia, you know it has been a very long time. In this case it is Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels. Born December 27, 1983, he was not born yet when the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in a 4-game sweep earlier that year in 1983 to win the NBA Finals. Cole Hamels, Shane Victorino, and Joe Blanton are three of the Phillies Players that were not born yet to witness the last Philadelphia Phillies World Series win in 1980.

   Tonight, October 27, 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies have a chance to end all of the misery. With a victory tonight, the Philadelphia Phillies will be the first pro-sports team to win a championship since 1983 and it will be the Philadelphia Phillies first World Series victory since 1980. The Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels will take the mound tonight in Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Ballpark against the Tampa Bay Rays' Scott Kazmir in Game 5 of the 2008 World Series with the Phillies leading the series 3-1. The Philadelphia Phillies need one more win and they have three games to do so, but nothing would be better then clinching the World Series tonight while playing in front of the home crowd in Philadelphia. Hopefully, tonight the twenty-five year drought of not winning a championship comes to an end in Philadelphia. You may never see a city celebrate as much as Philadelphia will if the Phillies can keep the momentum and win that last game to clinch World Series. A World Series Victory for the Philadelphia is one win away and the Philadelphia fans would love nothing more than to experience that Phillies Championship parade down Broadway Street.
