How to Prevent and Treat Dry Skin

Have you ever wonder why you get dry skin in the winter time? The combination of cold temperatures, low humidity and heating systems dry both the air and skin. Here are some ideas to help you keep your skin nice and healthy during the cooler months.

Bath in lukewarm water only

Those long hot baths or showers can actually severely dry out your skin. The heat from the hot water causes you to sweat and moisture to be lost. By switching to lukewarm water you can save your skin from moisture loss. However, not everyone likes to have lukewarm showers during the cold mornings and evenings. If this sounds like you then limit the length of your showers so that you don’t spend too much time under the hot water.

Exfoliate your skin regularly

Getting rid of the dry, dead skin cells is important to allow the fresh, new cells to appear. There is a lot of dirt and grime that also accumulates on the skin throughout the day. Exfoliating the skin helps to remove the dead cells and grime, and the best time to do this is during your shower. Use a mild scrub for your face.

Moisturize after showering and exfoliating

Moisturizing skin treatments help to hydrate and restore the skin. The best time to moisturize is straight after your shower when your skin is still a little bit moist. During the winter period, use a heavy cream. During summer, use a lighter one.

Use a humidifier in your home

One of the main causes of dry skin is a lack of humidity in the air. This can be due to the cold days or the heating systems in the home or office. A humidifier helps to replace the moisture in the air and raise the humidity level. You can buy one that can be used in a room or an entire house.

Increase your intake of H20

Drinking water is one of the most simple dry skin treatments and can help to replace the moisture lost throughout the day. You should drink at least 8 glasses daily to ensure that your skin is sufficiently hydrated. An added benefit of drinking water is that it can help reduce the look of wrinkles and fine lines by hydrating and thickening the skin.

Don’t use soap

Soap can dry out the skin. Instead of using it, look for cleansers that have glycerin or petrolatum as part of their ingredients. Such cleansers will clean the skin and moisturize at the same time.
