Good looking people are often the most outgoing and confident. The first thing people judge you by, is the way that you look. Your nose is a very important feature as it is right bang in the middle of your face and can’t be missed. Those with large or crooked noses can be quite shy about it and this in turn affects their confidence. Everyone wants a neat little nose that compliments the rest of their facial features and many are quite willing to pay for the privilege. If you haven’t heard of rhinoplasty, you are sure to know the phrase ‘a nose job’.

People seek rhinoplasty surgery for a number of different reasons. Perhaps their nose has been broken at some point in their life and healed in a crooked fashion. They may have been born with a birth defect or suffer from breathing problems. A deviated septum can make it difficult to breathe and a nose job can fix it.

Rhinoplasty is quite a common procedure these days and sought by both women and men. Simply smoothing out a bump on your nose can change the whole look of your face. It is possible to make noses smaller, narrower or straighter, just choose the look that appeal.

There are many people asking for rhinoplasty and surgeons have developed a skilled and practiced method to ensure everyone is satisfied. It is a relatively simple procedure but involves a lot of expertise and experience, so find yourself a surgeon who has carried out lots of other nose jobs and can explain the procedures and risks to you.  

There are two techniques surgeons employ to carry out a nose job. Less common is the open technique, as this is mainly for complicated operations. The nasal bones are reached by incisions made through the nostril and skin that separates the nostril, known as the columella.

Normally, for a routine nose job, the closed technique is used. The nasal bones are reached through incisions within the nostril and the skin is then separated from the bones and cartilage. This method is preferable as there is no scarring, as the surgeon is more or less working ‘blind,’ it is essential he is very skilled at his profession.

The surgeon will have to break the nasal bone in order to make his improvements and then re-set it in its new shape. At times, parts of the broken bone or cartilage are used to create the design of the nose as requested by the client. In some cases, such as Asian noses, prosthetic devices are used as well as the patient’s own cartilage to attain the look they want.

A local or general anaesthetic is given, depending on the amount of work to be done on the nose and the operation can be over in an hour.  

A rhinoplasty operation can be very painful. Once the procedure is over, your nose will be bandaged up and gauze inserted inside the nose to stop the bleeding. Your eyes and nose will be bruised and swollen and it can take weeks before the swelling of the area subsides. Unable to breathe through your nose, you will have to use your mouth, which can cause discomfort.

If you have a job you will definitely need to book some time off in order to take it easy and give time for the nose to heal. Sports and other physical activities are out. The pain can last for quite a while although the swelling and bruising will eventually disappear. Other side effects you can experience are a stuffy nose and a slight numbness. Just take it very easy for the first months and don’t do anything too physical that could cause bleeding or pain.

Rhinoplasty has been around for thousands of years and is not a new procedure at all. In India people had their noses cut off if they had committed a crime and surgeons would create a new nose for them. Luckily for us rhinoplasty has progressed since then.
