Many people are aware of the drastic changes recently in the world of health care in the United States. The available of health care is going to dramatically increase in the very near future. Also, with a significantly growing aging population, there is more need for ever than health care. This presents some problems, and plenty of opportunities.
If you happen to be a registered nurse, or are thinking of choosing this lucrative career path, then you will be front and center in this new health care paradigm. In this article I'll discuss few ways in which nurses can increase their responsibilities, handle more health care issues, and lessen the burden on health care centers. This, of course, can increase your value, as well as your potential salary.
The first thing to consider is that nurses are often the first line of defense. More than ever, with overflowing waiting rooms and emergency rooms, nurses can provide a vital service by taking as much information and data from the patients as possible. This can save lots of time and decrease the overall operating cost of any hospital or health care facility.
One big way nurses can help the growing need for health is to give out basic health advice, and even basic treatments. There are many cases when a doctor isn't really needed, such as common colds, and minor scrapes and bruises. A qualified nurse can adequately treat these cases, and keep doctors from being overworked. This will save time and money, and increase the value of these nurses.
Many hospitals are starting to use nurses to staff hotlines. These numbers are called by people when they have a condition, and they're not sure if they should come to the emergency room, or schedule an appointment for later. Trained nurses can give out information, and let people know the best course of action in these particular situations. That way the emergency rooms will be less crowded, and the hospitals will save money.
With managed care becoming more and more prominent, nurses can drastically cut down the amount of time a doctor needs to spend with each patient. This can be done increasing the nurses responsibility as far as gathering patient information. This can make it easier for the doctor to get an idea of what is going on with the patient before he speaks with them himself.
A nurse is obviously a vitally important job in today's society. As health care expands even more, nurses can take on an expanded role in many areas. This can increase the quality of health services, and decrease wasted time and money.
