Do you remember Windows ME?  If it's Clear don't feel bad.  It was a while ago and one of Microsoft's biggest flops.  It wasn't anything but a version with so many bugs and a higher version of Windows 98.  And many users actually paid for the upgrade.  There was excitement when Vista was nothing more than a whisper on the grapevine.  The first screen shots were pretty, an interface in the tradition of Apple's OSX.  Too bad that Vista won't be missed when Windows 7 becomes available.  It says something when shoppers, at the time of this writing, can go out and get a new computer loaded with Vista and also get a coupon for a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it hits the shelves.  Speaks volumes about the value of Vista, no?

If you haven't been using any of the beta versions of Windows 7 that Microsoft so generously released last year, then it's a safe bet that you're still running either XP or Vista.  It's a safe assumption that Windows 7 is going to replace XP and Vista as the most excellent OS pretty soon, so it'll be good for you to get to know Windows 7 very soon.

Shiny New Task bar

Everyone is familiar with the Windows task bar: the start button, clock, system tray.  All are old friends.  Windows 7 gives the standard task bar a new look, a polish, and a set of new options and settings.  Hovering your mouse's pointer over minimized window buttons resting on the task bar will allow preview thumbnails for each respective window.  Gliding your pointer over a thumbnail view will display the window's dimension and location on the desktop.

When running several instances of an application, Firefox or Internet Explorer, for example, the thumbnail preview will show all instances of those applications; Let suppose running 3 instances of IE will give you a thumbnail preview of your 3 browsers.  The - Show Desktop feature is nice.  Click Show Desktop >> Navigate your mouse pointer towards the system clock, and all windows on your desktop will turn transparent.

New Organization

With Windows 7 you get a new way to organize all your mp3s, videos, images, documents, and every other type of file you may have by way of the libraries features on the Windows Explorer's left side navigator pane.  One of the really annoying things of Vista was its persistent annoying behaviour whenever you wanted to do something on your computer.  Windows 7 was Microsoft's answer to improved security measures along with all Vista Flaws.

Windows 7 fixes this by making it extremely easy to calibrate the security settings via the Action Center.  Inside the Action Center you will find the User Account Control Settings.  The slider bar allows you to precisely adjust the level of security you want protecting your system.  If you're so inclined, you can turn off those irritating notification dialogs that pop up every time you want to install something.  You can even go so far as to completely turn off the notification messages for administration functions.

Microsoft's dominating browser, Internet Explorer, gets in-built in to version 8 in Windows 7.  A cool new feature of IE 8 is called Accelerators.  When perusing a web page select the blue icon (Accelerator Icon) and pick from a handful of options to perform on the selected text, such as searching for the text on Google, analyzing with Encarta, mapping with Live Search, and much more.

Sharing files has gotten easier too with Windows 7.  Shared devices can be connected to with ease thanks to the new Windows 7  HomeGroup networking feature.  A networking wizard makes setting up a new group and choosing a password a snap.
