LOCATION, September 26, 2010 – The Scrabble Timer improves game play. This will be an important part of the upcoming Scrabble Tournament in San Francisco. The competition begins Friday, October 29, 2010 and runs until Sunday October 31st.
The Third Annual California Open Scrabble Tournament is directed by Bennett Jacobstein and John Aitken. It will be held at Fisherman’s Wharf Sheraton in San Francisco. Participation is open to North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA) members.
The NASPA is a community of tournament, club and avid home players of the classic Scrabble board game. All competitive play consists of two-player games. They use the Official Tournament and Club Word List (OTCWL). The list was compiled from several college-level dictionaries.
People play the game at different paces. Some people are really fast while others are slow. To keep the tournaments running smoothly and on schedule, Scrabble timers are used to enforce time restrictions, typically limiting each player’s total thinking time to 25 minutes per game. Most games run 12–15 plays each, so each player can decide how to allocate that time, spreading the time for each move equally or save time for tougher moves that might be needed later in the game. If a contestant spends too much time, he or she will lose penalty points but do not immediately forfeit like they do in chess tournaments. The timer helps improve the quality of game play.
The Scrabble Timer website is entirely devoted to time keeping pieces for Scrabble Tournaments. If you would to view examples or purchase one of the timers, you can visit the website at http://www.ScrabbleTimer.com. The site even features an audio timer, and it has a video showing an example of fast Scrabble play.
