Chess has been around for quite a while and is still popular these
days. The game, as we know it today, emerged in the southern part of
Europe during the 15th century. An older Indian game was the basis for
the chess we know today.
Today chess is played by many people
across the world in clubs, online, in tournaments and at home. People
get closer together because of the game, especially when they aim to
teach others how to play.
There are many different variations
of chess sets and boards, however all of them have something in common.
A chess board is made up from 64 equal sized, black and white squares
in a 8 by 8 shape. Depending on your needs you can find chess sets and
boards with different themes and sizes.
Foldable chess sets
are very popular and found useful by many people. There is also a
special travel chess set, that is normally smaller in size. Travel
chess sets are great for vacations and other journeys because they are
usually compact and can give countless hours of fun. Folding and travel
chess sets are usually made of some variation of wood.
There
are also magnetic chess sets available on the market and they are
considered to be very useful since the pieces cannot slide from the
board. The magnetic chess sets come in various shapes and sizes and can
be made from materials like metal. The chess pieces are magnetized and
adhere to the board by a metal plate fitted under the board. With a
magnetic chess set you can play wherever you like whether it is in a
car, on a boat or even in a space shuttle! Well, maybe not during
launch of the shuttle, but you get the idea.
These days you
can even buy an electronic chess computer or an electronic chess set.
These kinds of chess sets and boards have some really nice features
like a game storage and a save function, which is very convenient if
you want to pause your game and continue another day. Another advantage
of having an electronic chess set or a computer is that with most of
them you can play versus the computer itself, which means that you will
always have an opponent. It can also be fun to turn off the single
player mode and play against a real human opponent.
Whether you play chess through an electronic device or on a regular chess board, the rules will always remain the same.
One of the most important rules in chess is that the player with the white pieces starts.
Each opponent places the same pieces on the board – a queen and king, two rooks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns.
The main goal for both players is to win from the other by checkmating
the king of the opposing player. ”Checkmate” is basically the point
where the king can’t move anymore. Some players call it war without
bloodshed. Many people from across the globe enjoy the game of chess.
