1. Start your day with a hot cup of water with a dash of lemon juice and a spoonful of honey. This is not only refreshing and energizing, but cleanses your palate and improves your liver function.
2. Peppermint, cypress, eucalyptus or geranium essential oils stimulate the nerves in your nose and palate, which in turn boost your energy levels. Try burning a few drops in an oil burner, or spill a few drops onto a tissue and inhale, especially when you hit an afternoon slump.
3. Eat breakfast. Good energy meals include whole grain cereals, oats or even a power-packed fruit smoothie containing bananas.
4. Smile. Even if you're having a bad day, look for something that will bring a smile to your face. Not only does it take more energy to frown, but the act of smiling (and getting a smile in return) releases feel-good hormones, which in turn boosts your energy.
5. Take a moment to breathe. Sit up straight and place the palms of your hand on your lower abdomen with your fingers lightly touching. Close your eyes and inhale deeply though your nose, extending your diaphragm. Ideally, your fingers should move slightly outward. Hold for a count of five, and then exhale slowly through your mouth.
6. Self-affirmation. Keep your mind as positive as possible by repeating positive affirmations. Challenge yourself, set goals and achieve them. Know that you can face anything that comes your way. Surround yourself with loved ones, and if you're feeling particularly low, invest in the personal touch. A hug, foot massage, or neck and shoulder rub are instant energy boosters and help lift tired spirits.
7. Pinch yourself. This quick acupressure technique helps when you are feeling down. Pinch the point between your thumb and forefinger, holding for two minutes and then gradually releasing.
8. Singing in the car or shower really does help boost your energy. Singing draws large amounts of oxygen into your body, which will enhance your mental clarity while helping to eliminate fatigue.
9. Embrace the light. Natural light is one of nature's most basic energy boosters. Get some sunshine and if it's too cold and grey outside, invest in some bright, illuminating light bulbs.
10. Take in the colors around you. If you're feeling sluggish, focus on oranges, yellows, pinks and reds, as these represent fire, heat and energy and therefore all mood boosters. If you feel overwhelmed, choose the calming colors of green, turquoise, lilac and purple.
