Ever wonder why it’s so difficult to
get everything done on your “to-do list”?
Or maybe you’ve lost touch with the “old you” and your brain doesn’t
function the way it once did.
In either
case, it’s important to get to know your brain and how it functions to help
restore it (and you) to its glory days.
But
how do you do that when the brain is SO complicated?
Well, that’s where the
experts at BrainHarmony come into play.
Jason Thomas Gomez, Director of Marketing Communications and Brain
Health Consultant suggest breaking down the clutter of neuro-science so you can
re-evaluate your lifestyle and take charge of your brain health.
Here are three easy “catch-all” buckets to
frame and think about your brain, its health and your lifestyle.
The brain’s number one
function is to survive, therefore, the first layer of brain function are all
the unconscious physiological workings your brain is in charge of
regulating.
For example, when’s the last
time you told yourself to breath?
How
about to regulate your liver’s toxins and digestive track after Super Bowl or to
boost your immune system after a long flight home?
None of us have to, thank god!
That’s because our brain
does it for us!
A good deal of
processing, energy and electrical activity is dedicated to keeping us
alive.
Imagine what kind of life we
would have if we consciously had to process all our biological functions
directly, our mind would be overwhelmed and we would have less time to relax on
the couch!
On top of regulating the
body and its necessary functions, the brain’s second job and our second layer
of brain function is supporting and serving our minds.
And we all know how our minds can get: busy,
fearful, anxious, clouded – sound familiar?
Our brain is shaped by
our environment, because our environment impacts our psyche and our brains are
designed to support our psyche.
Therefore, when we engage in regular unhealthy thought patterns such as,
“I wonder if he’ll call me back” or “I hope my wife doesn’t check my phone
records” along with worry, fear, anger and negativity; our brain is forced to
support all this junk and even becomes conditioned to do so.
And that’s when we feel
like we have very little control over our minds, our actions and our
lives.
This is where brain training
really comes in handy because it can break down some of the unhealthy and
unbalanced plasticity of the brain and gives fluidity back to it.
Believe it or not, our
brain is suppose to be able to shift and reconfigure itself to serve just about
any environment and situation we put ourselves in (yes, even those!).
So the brain is busy
supporting our personal fears and concerns as well as our hopes, dreams, goals
and aspirations but it is a matter of training our brains and our minds to do
so on a regular consistent basis or its Woody Allan and Howard Hughes for us.
Now, the third and final
layer of brain function for us to understand is our environment and the
external stimuli it provides our brain.
This would be any and all cues our brain processes consciously and
subconsciously.
From that special
someone-to-be you’re checking out while you figure out what size your latte is
going to be while pretending to hear the Starbucks cashier over the sound of
neo-jazz playing in the background.
Basically, anything in our
external surroundings, so do you think where we place ourselves and who we
place ourselves with matters? Duh, of course it does!
It has a direct impact on our brain and our
brain health.
So on top of regulating our
physiological workings to ourselves alive and in addition to supporting the
fears and hopes of our crazy “I want it now and I don’t care how I get it” minds,
the brain still has to process noises, sounds, smells, objects and distances,
rewards and potential dangers and threats.
You thought you were overworked!
So when you see the huge amount of workload
our brain has it’s no wonder we’re stressed out and unbalanced at unprecedented
levels.
Think about our fast paced go-go society and all the new and
emerging technology that impacts this third level of brain function causing our
brain to keep track of more things…our cell phones, satellite radios, GPS
navigation systems, laptops, iPods and media advertisements competing for our
attention.
That’s a lot to process!
The kicker is, we only have one brain and so much electrical
activity to go around so if you’re placing stress, strain and wear and tear on
any of these layers you’re going to take a hit in the others.
Here’s where all this “rubber” meets the “road”: take a look
now at your own life.
What do you
see?
With this 3-layer cake of brain
function I baked for you, look how your lifestyle might be organized and
structured to put more stress and strain on your brain.
Is the extra pack of cigarette’s a week or 4th cup
of coffee really helping that first layer of your brain?
Leaving you constantly drained, unmotivated and
too tired to do anything because your brain is spending all its “capital”
dealing with your body’s physiological challenges and isn’t as available for
you in the other areas of life like your relationships or your mental health.
Maybe he just really isn’t that into you and there’s no need
to obsess and worry about it so much?
This can be throwing your brain off at the
second layer making focus and concentration difficult and flaring up your
emotions as your mind races from “what if” to “oh no” in less than 6 seconds
flat.
Or maybe mom and dad were right; those friends aren’t that
great an influence on you or your wife isn’t that crazy when she said this job
would turn you into a work-a-holic? This third layer can be the trickiest
because sometimes we have jobs and relationships that are hard to remove
ourselves from emotionally, physically and financially but with this framework
you won’t have to wonder why anymore.
Remember, our brain is involved in everything we do, from our
emotional states, immune system and mental capacity to our decisions on love,
life and work so look at your life through the eyes of your brain and start
helping it help you.
