A skiing trip is a fantastic holiday whether it’s with family or friends. Skiing is easy to master and offers adrenaline thrills at little risk alongside spectacular views - it’s clear to understand why the sport has grown to be so massively popular. Whilst we are aware of the essential kit, your kid's ski jackets and kid's ski pants, what number of us actually give too much thought to the local knowledge for the area we're heading.
The timing of your holiday plays a key part in the sort of conditions you'll encounter once you get there, officially the ski months are from December through to March. If you are taking your break at the start of the season, don't forget that the snow can be patchy and conditions can be at times icy, which is not great for people just learning. January and February are usually the ideal months for skiing, particularly in Northern Europe, however it is best to avoid the last two weeks in February as plenty of European school holidays happen at this time.
When thinking of skiing locations, most of us tend to think of France, Austria and Switzerland. France boasts one of the worlds most famous ski resorts, Chamonix. Chamonix is fantastically equipped for a skiing holiday with excellent transport links throughout the resorts. Plus fresh snow is practically always guaranteed since most of the slopes are above 2000m. It is worth bearing in mind though, because of its popularity, Chamonix can get very busy.
While France is currently Europe’s most favored ski destination, Austria comes a close second. Austria has a small disadvantage in that its resorts generally lie just a little lower than those in France. This hardly ever causes problems, particularly in mid season, but if you’re arranging a skiing holiday to Austria earlier or later in the season you ought to check recent snow reports so you can be certain the conditions will be suitable.
Switzerland would be the perfect choice for those of us who food and exquisite surroundings. The country is renowned for featuring some of the best mountain restaurants across the world, and nothing beats stopping in the middle of a snow covered mountain for a fantastic meal, a steaming hot chocolate and incredible views.
You're also likely to enjoy smaller crowds in Switzerland dues to its misrepresentation as an expensive place to holiday. Actually, some of the ski resorts in France can cost around the same as those in Switzerland.
If you’re skiing within a strict budget, Italy is often a good choice, because it is often quite a bit cheaper compared to neighbouring ski destinations. General cost of living is normally cheaper too, meaning that if you’ve left the purchase of your kids ski jackets or kids ski pants to the last minute, you’ll probably get a better deal in Italy than you'd elsewhere.
If cash allows, you might like to think about travelling further a field to try the ski resorts in the U.S or Canada. These countries tend to offer longer ski seasons; in some places you are able to ski as late as June, and once you reach there, you often get more for your buck than in Europe.
California boasts ‘Mammoth Mountain’, and as the name indicates, this mountain is utterly gigantic. It is a massive 11,000 feet and boasts in the region of 3,500 acres of slopes. Last but not least Canada, which has been host to this years Winter Olympics and home to 'Whistler' one of the best skiing destinations in the world.
