Family fun can be created by sitting down with the kids and creating your own homemade Christmas tree ornaments out of everyday items. While some families may want to stick with commercial decorations to create a showpiece for their holiday tree presentation, using homemade Christmas tree ornaments can help the children in the household feel more a part of the family decorating tradition.
Many of the crafts can be done by the children, with the help or at least the supervision of their parents, making the decorations a family affair. Popsicle sticks can be turned into many different types of decorations and they are very useful in making homemade Christmas tree ornaments.
Sticks that are painted to resemble candy canes can be used as small signposts as well as painted to resemble reindeer and with a little imagination and a lot of patience can be used to make a sleigh for the reindeer to pull inside the tree. When making homemade Christmas tree ornaments parents can assign age appropriate tasks to the children, often performing most of the more delicate work themselves, but still keeping the children involved.
The projects can be as simple or complex as the parents wish, but it is important to keep in mind the age and attention span of the kids involved in making homemade Christmas tree ornaments. These types of family projects is a great way to teach the younger members that it can be more fun to make your own Christmas ornaments than going to store and buying the same things everyone else will be using.
Learning To Appreciate Their Own Creations
In addition to saving a few dollars on the cost of commercial decorations, children will learn a new appreciation for art by making homemade Christmas tree ornaments. They can also brag to other relatives about how they worked on the project and point out their own creations that are hanging proudly on the tree. It is also about teaching them to have self-esteem and, depending on their age, can be applauded for their efforts, regardless of the appearance of the finished project.
Creating a miniature mantle out of those leftover popsicle sticks and using infant socks to hang on the miniature fireplace can be homemade Christmas tree ornaments that children can take with them when they grow up and leave the house. The time spent with them on holidays projects can also teach them important lessons on doing things as a family instead of always going out and buying the decorations.
