Steps To Creating A Custom Built Garage
The first thing you need to consider is where and how big your garage will be. Important in this decision is how big the door is. I would start your design here as it is much easier to design a custom built garage around the door rather than try to fit a door into a custom design later on. There are a number of high quality garage door retailers around so find one in your area and take a look at what they have to offer.
By starting with the door, your custom garage design should come together much easier than if you started with the overall garage. For the door you need to know the width and height you want. This should be based on your cars. Once you have that you probably are going to want to add at least a foot on either side for side room. At least another foot on top for headroom, than at least 18 inches past the height of the door to accommodate it. Once you have those numbers you have your basic outline for your garage.
After that you can really start to get into your custom built garage. Next steps will include picking out the floor, with a design if you want, as well as cabinetry and wall hangs. Each of these components has their own unique qualities and features, so do some research before you buy. I recommend looking at going with as much metal as you can as opposed to wood. Wood has a tendency to rot in water, and garages, no matter how well built, have a tendency to be wet.
Colors and other options for the walls, doors and floor are an important part of making your custom built garage truly your own. There are many different things you can go with but I suggest finding a theme and sticking with it. A popular idea lately has been to model your garage around your favorite sports or race team. This gives you a very defined color palette to work with and will focus your design even more.
