In recent times at regular intervals, we are discovering that a thief, conman, or a robber possesses a professional degree. These individuals have become so much addicted to a life of extravagance and impressing others to feel good about themselves that they are willing to do petty crime to sustain it. When they realize that their competence does not fit for finding a good job or the salary is below their expectations (however unrealistic the expectations are) they feel justified to do criminal activities.
It seems that they get satisfied from the external symbols of success rather than finding intrinsic motivation from being a capable professional. In early years of their career, they do not focus on learning. They are lacking the need to earn the fruits of success. They look to make money quickly instead of building competence. The tendency to take short cuts to success and a lack of self-awareness are causing these individuals to be unaware when they cross the line onto criminal activities.
As the country got more educated, many individuals have grown in socio-educational terms i.e. unlike anyone earlier in their family they have cleared more levels in college. However, individuals from such backgrounds are likely to have a strong hubris that is developed over the years by their near and dear ones – “pampering” this person. They might have continuously said –“No one else in our family has got this far at school or college”.
Plus, compared to earlier, the percentages in exams are very liberal. Take a look at SSC exams last year. The highest was over 590 marks. Even, if someone got 100 in math, 99 each in Science, they got 98 marks in English, Telugu, Hindi, and Social Studies. Earlier no student got more than low 80’s in these subjects – even if they performed extremely well on that exam. Giving 90% marks in languages was a strict no-no. When people from earlier generations’, who look at these mark sheets, cannot help but be wrongly impressed with percentages.
It is not that the kids are any smarter; the fact is that the standards are lower today. Many of the students with over 80% overall percentage and having over 70 marks in English cannot compose a slightly complex sentence without a grammatical or spelling mistake.
From a social perspective, since the kids are doing well – many elders make the mistake of not correcting negative behaviors, attitudes, and values in these kids early in their life. Since, the kids are doing well in academics, they wrongly believe that it takes care of building the right attitudes and values. This leads the kids to believe that values and attitudes are not important. This is one of the major reasons why they do not feel wrong about committing crime until the police catch them.
Lastly, as the family considers this person as the future star and they over-look the mistakes or false deeds he/she would do. Before some crime is committed over the years, there will be many instances where the family cover up/let go for the mistakes committed by this individual. As a result, this person develops insensitiveness to right morals.
At the first instance of committing a mistake itself – the family has to let the person face its negative consequences and make sure that the person feels sorry for it. This will ensure that the person becomes mature and learns to respect that some things in life are not negotiable.
