This is a quick guide for the organizer of the next party or function on the communication required to hire an awesome disc jockey.

There are many lists and articles out there in print and on the internet showing what you as a potential customer should be looking for when you hire a Disc Jockey for your next party or event.
This article is different because it gives you the ability as the client the tools to organize an event to remember with relation to the over all joy your guests will have because you have gotten the right disc jockey.
A Professional Disc Jockey is like any other service person you interact with in daily life. Just like any other professional service provider you would deal with if you communicate effectively your needs and expectations your disc jockey will go out of their way to ensure that you and your guests will receive an excellent service to your requirements.
The worst disc jockey is a person who does not meet your expectations! Recently while I was disc jockeying in a Melbourne bar a young lady asked me (through proxy) if I had a certain song, I said all apologies but no, not at this time. Young ladies response was: "Well, you shouldn't be a DJ then." Obviously her expectations or preconceived ideas did not conform to reality! The expectations were not the problem, the ideals, judgments and lack of communication was.
The following is a short list, its objective is clearly designed to help you, the event organizer and DJ make your next event an event to remember.
1. Do not be afraid to ask for something. If you do not ask, you do not get.
Regardless of the stories and hype, disc jockeys are not mind readers. Like life if you want something you have to ask. Your disc jockey will let you know if it is something they can or would do, if it is something they do not do chances are they know and will recommend someone that will. All you have to do is ask, there are no givens.
2. Write a list of 10 things you expect from your DJ.
For example, details of the function, do you want people to dance or is a more of a cocktail party and your guests will chat more? Do you want your DJ to be the life of the party or to get the guests involved on the microphone? Do you want your disc jockey to stay in the background? Do you want a MEGA "Doof Doof" sound system? Perhaps you'd like the DJ to be dressed in a formal manner or perhaps leopard print leather hot pants?
In all cases, close your eyes for a minute or two and imagine what the evening will look like, write it down and email that list to your DJ.
3. Prepare your DJ.
Your disc jockey may not and probably can not carry every song ever written, remixed, remastered or covered. Also it is not always feasible to just "download" the song there and then; there are professional ethics as music artists to be considered. There could even be many songs or genres that your guests absolutely must have or just as importantly must not be played example anything by Cold Chisel would be a definite 'no' at a function I was organizing.
Let your disc jockey know what it is you want for your event, if your disc jockey is reluctant or not capable of fulfilling your requirements, do not hire them. Hiring a disc jockey is not rocket surgery.
