Reading Tabs for Guitar: Before you start reading guitar tabs you initially need to know their orientation, and to do this you need to have a tab. Cradle the guitar in the playing position and observe the line which is the topmost on the tab. This represents the bottom or thinnest guitar string.
The tab's second line indicates the second string from the bottom, and it proceeds like that and ends with the last tab line which represents the thickest or topmost guitar string.
how to read tabs- Once you have familiarized yourself with the lines, notice the digits which are written between the lines. These numbers represents the frets on your guitar.
The number 1 represents the first fret, and number 2 represents the 2 second fret, and so on. The fret the numbers indicate are meant to be pressed on by your fingers. However, if the number is 0 then you strum that string without any fingers pressed on any frets.
It is important to practice the correct positioning of your hands and fingers. In other words, you should practice on both the fret positions and orientation. The next step is simple: play the numbers that are vertically aligned at the same time, then switch your fingers at the next vertical stack.
Practice with these guides first. These are the very basics. After this, you will then proceed to learn additional symbols, which further influence the way you play. Examples are the h (hammer on), p (pull off), b (bend the string), and / (slide). Many other symbols give certain characteristics to the tune you produce. Until you reach mastery with these however, just play on.
