If you are planning a Florida scuba diving trip then any serious plans have to include Key Largo. It has long been known as "The Scuba Diving Capital of the World" and when you see start to look deeply at this place you can see why it was recognized as one of the top scuba diving areas.
"The Keys" is a well-liked area for divers and you will discover Key Largo at the north end with Key West at the furthest southern point. One of the most famed places at Key Largo is John Pennekamp State Park.
Documented as the first protected park to be found underwater, John Pennekamp State Park is an area filled full of fabulous dive sites. Of all "The Keys", Key Largo has continually been the place for the serious diver whilst for some travelling to Florida scuba diving Key West has had an allure due to its nightlife.
The one factor Florida scuba trips to Key Largo will give you is alternatives and diversity. Whatever your skill level and experience Key Largo has something for everyone.
For the experienced diver a Florida scuba trip would not be complete without diving the U.S.S. Spiegel Grove. This 510ft ship was intentionally sunk in 2002 and was the biggest ship ever sunk off the shores of Florida.
This shipwreck is sited in deeper waters and can be quite a trial to experienced divers and is off limits to inexperienced divers. The limited bottom time means this wreck needs more than one dive to fully survey.
Looking for a unique Florida scuba scuba diving site? How about dropping in to see the dive site Christ of the Abyss? This 4000lb effigy is one of those unique dive sites that you must call in on even if you are just snorkeling. Donated by Egidi Cressi in 1962 to the Underwater Society of America, the statue was sunk on its concrete base in just 22 feet of water on the seaward side of the reef.
Several of the reefs in Key Largo are an underwater paradise for those who love digital photography and the most recognized of all the reefs is Molasses Reef. Probably one of the most well-liked dive sites in Key Largo if not the world, this reef is one of the most delightful reefs you are ever likely to come across. Fantastic marine life giving lovely colors makes Molasses Reef one of the most photographed reefs in the world. The clear and fairly shallow waters means the lighting is just right and with some striking marine life as your background and subjects you cannot help but take some amazing underwater pictures.
Certain divers just love diving shipwrecks and any Florida scuba trip to Key Largo can include many shipwreck dives.
Whilst the USS Spiegel Grove is a must do dive there are additional thrilling ship wrecks in Key Largo includiing the cutters U.S.S. Duane and U.S.S. Bibb. Now well matured, these 2 shipwrecks provide an thrilling experience with easy access to both ships as they were fully prepared for scuba divers before their sinking.
Still one of the major scuba diving destinations it would seem that Key Largo has something for everybody, unique statues and caves, shallow reefs full of amazing marine life and shipwrecks so great that they take days to explore.
Key Largo has other reasons for being everyones favorite Florida scuba diving spot and one of them is its location. Located where it is key largo has some great advantages. The Atlantic Ocean has numerous marine life, some very large, and the Gulf Stream runs north up the coastline bringng with it food for the reef system.
Perhaps a key factor as to why Key Largo is a major Florida scuba diving destination is because you are only 2 hours from Miami airport making this one of the easiest top class scuba diving resorts to access.
