Many people work on search engine optimisation as they know of the huge benefits it can bring to their business and that it is one of the most effective forms of marketing around. SEO is effective because the users who are finding your website through search engine results already have intent to buy the product or service they have specified in their search term. Localised SEO proves even more effective as the user is searching for an extremely long tail phrase that is specific to one location.
You are able to localise your search marketing campaign by including geographical locations in your target key phrases. This means that users searching for that product or service only want to find results from a certain area, they are searching for something niche and long tail which is why it returns high conversion rates. An example of geotargeting would be ‘Indian Food Manchester’ instead of simply ‘Indian Food’ on it’s own.
Local SEO isn’t relevant for every one, it may not be suitable for your industry or target market. Companies providing a national service that isn’t affected by the location of their customers won’t be affected by local SEO. Geotargeting tends to be for smaller, local companies. Restaurants or food delivery places usually only offer services within a small area therefore local SEO is essential as they would waste money targeting the whole country, it would be completely irrelevant for someone far away to find their website. At the beginning of your SEO project make sure to research whether local SEO is suitable for your business or not.
Search engines are stepping in new realms of geotargeting as they bring in new techniques to match search results to users by IP address. This would mean that your search engine results pages would show websites that are registered to an IP close to yours. This concept is still being tested however so don’t count on it yet!
