Training kids is very different from coaching players who are in college or high school. While the latter are quite motivated and know exactly what they want, the former bunch can be quite unruly and overtly hyper.
However, if you make use of the following methods, there is no way that these kids will not grow up to be exceptional players. While coaching kids soccer, keep in mind that they are mostly in it to have fun and to not push them too hard. If you do so, they will want to quit and the entire purpose of the activity will be defeated.
Their motivation is to have a good time and for some, to please their parents. They do not care about the trophies or awards. They are not playing to win a scholarship. All they want is to play and have fun. Soccer coaches tend to overlook this fact and yell at them if they do not meet the instructions or guidelines. This causes the kids to suffer from low-esteem and hampers teamwork as well.
On the other hand, if you incorporate fun into these instructions and into daily soccer regimes, there will be no room for complaints.
If you are a new soccer coach and you choose to deal with a kid's soccer team, do not get taken aback if you are presented with a loud and unruly bunch. Over time, they will learn the importance of team work and of soccer culture. They will understand why it is important to be on time and that they should treat other teammates with respect if they want respect in return.
All in all, you will see them transform into a team. In this case, make sure that you introduce them to these rules slowly and steadily because they will probably not be aware of them. If you introduce changes into the team, make sure that you ask them for their opinions.
A coach who is training a kid's soccer team should also know how to keep the players motivated and teach them certain values during the process. For this, the coach should observe each and every player and motivate him or her individually.
An excellent incentive is rewarding those who perform well during the game. A kids soccer coach should make sure that he acknowledges the child's effort and gives him more time on the field. This will make them feel valued and hence, help the team to win.
At the same time, coaches should make sure that they reprimand those who do not follow instructions or those who do not show up on time. This will make them realize that they are responsible as well as accountable for their actions.
However, the methods employed should not be harsh and the child should not be mocked or made fun of. A healthy punishment would be to ask the child to stay on the sidelines during the game so that he is motivated to attend every practice in the future.
