The Basics of WMV Video

It's hundreds of millions of bits per second that must be treated or stored. The signal recorded on magnetic tape for a long time was a feat of engineering. The rapid evolution of technology has led to a multitude of standards, some of which have disappeared or are endangered. It is not easy even for the specialist to navigate.

In computing, the videos are digitized and stored in files. One of the major disadvantages of digital video is the space required for data storage. In the uncompressed format, one minute of video can take up several hundred MB of disk space! Compression systems have been developed: With these systems, the file size decreases significantly (up to 5 MB/min). In return, the image quality also decreases, but the quality/size is quite correct.

To achieve this, there is different mathematics involved. To generate or read a compressed video, the computer must know the encoding chosen. The coding rules are stored in files called codecs (coding/decoding) to be installed. An 'Avi' could just as well be encoded in DivX, in Intel Indeo or DVD. Players that read Avi files use external codecs. For other extensions (Mpg, Mov, etc ...), the codec is unique. To play a video encoded with a codec you must have this codec! But everyone does not necessarily have the same codecs! We must therefore choose between a widespread but inefficient codec and a good but not widespread codec. A now well known standard is DivX.

Yes! Just use the right software. Nero or Easy Media Creator for example, performs this task for you. If you have Windows 7 or Vista, you do not need additional software. Indeed, these two Windows versions incorporate a program called Windows DVD creator. It will know what to do with your videos to WMV. Whatever your choice of software, the indispensable condition to be fulfilled is that your film must not be protected against unauthorized copying (DRM).

The problem is that most mobile devices such as the blackberry only read videos in particular formats and they especially support avi format. As such, when you are done creating your dvd in the Windows DVD creator you will want to use a good DVD maker software  to convert wmv to dvd format.
