With the advent of the internet, everything seems to be available on the net. Its vast reach, and easier availability has made society, business and almost everything stand on its head.
One of these is the educational system. Today you have virtual universities; you can access university libraries from wherever you are, ask questions about various topics and get answers. Indeed some sites offer solutions to your home work as well! You can earn a degree from as far away as you like.
With the addition of high resolution internet cameras, Skype phones, is there really need to go physically to college or school? These thoughts come to this writer who went through the rigors of getting ready for school at 6.00 a.m. and returning late evening, all by bus, often punished by teachers for not wearing the right knot on the tie, hanging socks and so on!
In our time and age, going to school, although it was frightening in the first few days, and I don’t mind saying I resisted, cried, had imaginary headaches, stomach aches and so on, to avoid going to school.
Once that phase was over, school became a pleasure, till the class exams started suddenly. It was like being doused in extremely cold water, and the usual butterflies in the stomach. When Mom or Dad asked how it went, there was the evasive answer, good. My Dad would say let’s see when your report comes in. That was an ominous remark and lodged itself firmly in the mind.
Well to put it mildly, I did not do well in some subjects. Math was one I was totally scared of, chemistry as long as it stuck to normal equations, which could be mugged up, was okay; unless you had to use math to work out some silly residue! Same with physics: Math would not just go away. And Algebra, Geometry was absolute terrors. You might say what is left? English? You are right. There too I had problems with verbs, adverbs, prepositions (I always used propositions – maybe I was being old for my age?) etc.
So my parents started my tuitions at home after school. Off went my cricket practice, hanging around, and fooling around in the marketplace.
6.00 p.m. became the dreaded sound. I would wait patiently for the time, and once it was past, I thought I had escaped. No sir, the tutor was late because the town bus was late.
Well as they say, the best efforts of men often fail. My tutor was more interested in completing his job and running, and not interested in teaching – I say that, not my parents. Well he left me in more knots that I was already in. And in the absence of telephones in those days, getting over the tutor was not possible.
Today, in the 21st century, things seem to have changed quite a bit. I say quite a bit, because there are still teachers around who enjoy teaching their wards, and who take it as a professional challenge to educate a person who does not understand what the heaven someone discovered pie (22/7) for?
Then tutoring went into cyberspace! If you don’t like a tutor online, you simply changed him by the click of the mouse. And chose another one or chose many others, who charged much less than calling a tutor home.
I was looking up the internet for tutors on line, and I found on one search engine alone an approximate 463,000 online tutors related results! Obviously it must be greater than that or there may be duplications. But that is neither here nor there. It is a fact that tutoring has become modern, and certainly cheaper.
As to the quality aspect of teaching, just like the market forces which force the weak out, I am sure that in the internet too this would happen faster than ever before.
The beauty of the tutoring on the Internet is that you get to choose your own teacher, he keeps you riveted on the screen while he takes you through the problem you have in understanding a subject or a piece of the subject. Second, since it is also seen visually, the retention power of the mind is sharpened, and remains at the back of your mind.
The newer tools, like the virtual board on which the questions and answers can be taken step by step certainly help. Oh, sorry, I forgot about Skype. This is not an ad for that service provider. PC to PC conversation on Skype allows the teacher and the student to communicate with each other orally in case of doubts. Then some companies also offer their own personalized classrooms, with integrated voice feature.
Certainly, tutoring online has come in handy for a vast majority of students living all over the world. But those opting for this form of tuition should have a benchmark by which they can evaluate a system and see whether it is fit for their children. There are very many scams, and the educational system on the internet is no exception.
I do not hold a candle for any particular site, but would rather mention the geographical areas instead where you can find online tutors who have some professional ethics about teaching, and where the teacher is still revered as second to the Almighty.
You might try India, China (although their ability to teach in English is a question mark in my mind. Having stuck my neck out let me say that you could possibly try out transwebtutors. I have heard quite a bit about this site, all to the good. But you have to make up your own mind. I am not recommending any particular site, because every student has his own way of being mentored, and mentoring is a difficult process.
