As you follow the path past the Garden Cottage, deep purple ground orchids skirt the walkway. Continue towards the swimming pool and you are confronted with a mass of two to three metre high miniature, flaming orange coloured orchids. Walk on through a tropical garden area and high over your head hang more sprays of dainty mauve and white orchids.
Rick and Wendy reveal their secret with a laugh, "We happen to be fortunate enough to live on a tropical island in the South Pacific, which is the Happiest Country On Earth". When Rick and Wendy bought the property in 2002, when it was a run-down private home with three rentals on it. They have turned it into a successful boutique holiday accommodation.
"Going by all the well placed retaining walls and numerous fruit trees, the original owner must have been a keen gardener", explains Wendy. "Sadly by the time we took it over, there were no gardens left. It has taken four years to see the gardens come to the present level of maturity".
Guests are able to laze in the swimming pool and enjoy the panoramic views of the lagoon. Exotic tropical plants greet you at every turn, from high on the road right down to the waters of Erakor Lagoon. With an acre of landscaped land surround the lodges, each unit it tucked away behind walls of natural greenery, giving the guests their own area of privacy.
"I would have trouble finding Wendy in the car when she finally came home on a Saturday morning, after trawling the local markets for plants", Rick laughs. "She would then spend the rest of the day planting them. I have seen her shift a plant up to five times before it found a home that everyone was happy with. Now the gardeners do the maintenance and are doing a really great job".
Even if you are not staying at Seachange Lodge, as there are only six self-contained units, it is well worth a visit, just to walk through the gardens.
