Invercargill is the capital as well as commercial center of the Southland in New Zealand. Favorably placed on the Southern scenic route, the city is the gateway to some of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenery and destination including the Southland heartland, Stewart Island, Fiordland and the Catlins. Invercargill with its exotic locations invites you to experience the warmth, friendliness and hospitality that make it such a great place to visit.
Invercargill is less than 30 minutes to the port town of Bluff Oyster and mere a 10 minute drive from Oreti Beach and just 30 minutes from the fishing town of Riverton. Hence, a car hire in New Zealand is a better option to move around these places. The other tourist places such as Catlins, Fiordland, Queenstown and other desirable locations are readily accessible from Invercargill.
Invercargill has an exclusive range of shops and a selection of lively bars and restaurants. Thus, it is well- equipped to enjoy the most. Victorian, Edwarian and Art Deco heritage buildings give the city character. The museum has a tuatara house and the rose gardens at Queens Park blooms fully in its true color during summer. The art gallery at Anderson Park exhibits quality art from the far south and throughout New Zealand. If you are looking for local food specialties then oysters and blue cod will cater your taste buds.Travelers on their tour to the Invercargill can explore the beautiful city with boulevards, parks and beautiful walks. Like Dunedin, Invercargill has a Scottish Heritage. Want to have fun on a beach, visit the nearby Catlins Coast, which offers a stunning environment to enjoy. Curio Bay, which is located 88km South East of Invercargill is not to miss as at low tide you can see the 160 million year old fossil remains of an ancient forest. Also at low tide, you can explore the series of 5 interconnecting Caves known as Cathedral Caves at Waipati Beach. These caves can reach 20m in height. You can only reach them within 2 hours of low tide and make sure that you bring a flash light. Fur seals and blue penguins are sometimes seen in the deep recesses of the caves. The Maclean Falls River walk is worth a visit as it follows the Tautuku river valley to the stunning Maclean Falls. You will be mesmerized to see fantails accompanying you and also you will be serenaded by bellbirds and tuis. A trip to Nugget Bay Lighthouse and nearby Cannibal Bay is interesting and an opportunity to see fur seals and sea lions.
Gourmet of Bluff oysters would be bliss and not miss the Tiwai Point Aluminum Smelter on your visit to Bluff. Stewart Island is just an hour away by ferry from Bluff. Here you can enjoy the beautiful walks or visit Ulva Island home to many rare native birds.Visit Splash palace, Southland aquatic center, which is usually open all year round except for Christmas. Pick an Invercargill hire car to visit the Southland museum and art gallery where you can see the fine art, techno displays, nautical exhibits, tuatara and the Southern Hemispheres largest pyramid. The wide streets, fine heritage buildings, excellent shopping facilities and the warm hospitality of locals will surely make your vacation truly enjoyable.
