Keeping yourself safe is travel advice that must not be taken for granted. Security should always be the first thing to be taken into consideration whether at home or outdoors. This is especially true when traveling because when you find yourself in unfamiliar places, you don't know what the risks are.
As we all know, our appearance is a large factor. We should strive to look less like a stranger or tourist and more like a local. Outrageous outfits are the first to be eliminated for this serves as a sure sign to the locals that we are not from the place. Opt for simple and comfortable clothes and steer clear of expensive jewelry. In order to avoid the wrong crowd, then we should not give them any more reasons to target us.
The cardinal rule is to blend with the crowd as much as possible. In order to avoid drawing attention, then you should dress simply. Wearing expensive jewelry should be avoided because this might send the wrong signals to the wrong kind of people...so it's better to avoid it. Remember that the more you look like a local, then the less you will be targeted by bad elements.
Valuables such as passports, cash and credit cards should be secured. So keep them in a secret pocket of a coat or bag. Keep your valuables in various places instead of keeping them in a single pouch. Keep them in a concealed place that is less likely to be found. When in doubt, you can always opt for a hotel safe. Steer clear of handbags, fanny packs and outside pockets as places for safe keeping as they are easy targets for thieves. Most seasoned travelers keep their valuables in a money belt worn underneath their clothing.
Those who plan for overseas travel usually bring a lot of cash with them. However, this step is unwise; traveler's checks and credit cards should be brought instead. We can avoid the inconvenience of a lost or stolen passport by preparing in advance. By keeping an extra set of passport photos handy as well as a photocopy of our passport's information page, we can easily avail ourselves of a replacement.
Bring only the essential things that you need whether you travel. In other words, travel light. If possible, try to pack everything in a single bag. Not only will this increase mobility, but it will also allow you to monitor your belongings more effectively. A free hand is always needed when countering possible malicious attempts.
Finally, it is best to leave a copy of our schedule with friends and family. This is especially important when our travel abroad takes a number of days. The more we are in contact with our social support system, the more secure we are. We are better able to inform them of possible changes in our trip or any emergency we may encounter.
Security consciousness is a mark of a good traveler, whether he is at home or on the move. A relaxing vacation could be enjoyed more fully by practicing these simple rules.
