The evolution of the internet has been a rapid evolution and has revolutionized the world. Whereas even 5 years ago a website tended to be rather static and a showcase of the company at the moment no company can afford to be without a website and that website cannot be static. There are many aspects to the internet and this article will look at just 3 of the commonest uses of website and how website design is developing. It is in this rapid changing milieu where a digital agency has to continually update itself to even remotely be aware of the latest trends in websites

Information websites
Newspapers, TV schedules, weather reports, flight times, train schedules and virtually anything that people wish to know on a day to day basis is available somewhere on an information website. These sites are updated frequently and have to be accurate. Many of these are paid for by advertising revenue so the "pages" will tend to be split into panels; some for the content and the rest for the advertisements. If one goes to the Melbourne Herald Sun, for example, one sees adverts in the masthead and a right hand panel is taken up by a moving advert.

Website design tends to play around a bit with the site until the digital agency is reasonably happy then they would hand the content management over to the organization to update on its own.

Personal and Social Media
Facebook, Twitter, MySpace are the best known social media sites. The impact of Facebook has been so widespread that they project there will be 1 billion on line accounts in 2011. Obviously the Facebook people have whole rafts of people busy with website design as the digital agency that handles that account sees changes to its appearance and functionality often.

Many people also have personal web pages other than a Facebook or MySpace presence which they mostly handle themselves using a HTML package. These are usually for information and to keep friends and family abreast of current activities. . They often go out of date and fall into disuse as the work involved in updating them is considerable and time consuming. Because Facebook and MySpace, to name but 2, make this updating personal info so easy it is becoming increasingly uncommon. There is very little work for those involved in Website design and any digital agency, unless they invent a new Twitter they will starve if they expend much effort in this field.

Ecommerce
In a short space of time ecommerce has absorbed a massive slice of the sales market. In the USA alone transactions are projected to reach over US$200 billion during 2011. So in any language ecommerce is BIG business.

Online auctions and sales sites such as Amazon and Ebay have immense turnover, usually on these websites it is Person to Person (P2P) transactions with the website taking a cut and administering the sale.

The major retailers also have to get in on the action. Every retailer who wants to stay in business cannot ignore this at all. Each major chain will have a website with frequent updates.

This is where the job of the website design is critical. As mentioned above fashions and appearances change the whole time. There are myriads of people constantly introducing new gadgets, design tools and animations to the market. As the Internet spreads and the bandwidth increases digital agencies are constantly monitoring their client's website and introducing these new applications.
