The Role Of The Best Man

So you've been asked to be the best man... and accepted the responsibility. Now what?

On top of throwing a great bachelor party and showing up at for the wedding with a great best man speech in hand, there are many other things you can do to help the wedding run smoothly. Here's a few you may not have expected to help out with. I'm sure you'll have fun, and make a great best man.

Tuxedo rentals
Usually the best man will go with the groom to decide on colors and styles of tuxedos, if the bride hasn't decided for him. Once the styles are chosen, it's the best man's responsibility to arrange a time for himself and the groomsmen to be fitted for their tuxes. Depending on the wedding, he may also be responsible for the cost of his own rental. It's also his responsibility to have the tux returned and also that of the groom's if he and the bride are leaving right after the reception for their honeymoon.

Coordinating the Groomsmen
To relieve the groom of the burden of keeping track of all the details of organizing and managing all the groomsmen, the best man is often shouldered with this responsibility. For rehearsals for instance, if there's a change of plans or time, the best man would call the groomsmen and inform them of the changes. Also, on the day of the wedding, for the ceremony and reception, it's the best man's responsibility to make sure they groomsmen are where they aught to be and are doing what they aught to be doing.

Support during the reception and the keeper of the rings
The best man is also charged with the task of standing with the groom for support while he awaits the bride to walk down the aisle. And once everyone's arrived and the ceremony is taking place, to keep the rings safe until asked for by the officiant. This ensures that the potentially nervous groom doesn't lose the rings or forget where he put them.

The best man is generally charged with the task of supporting the groom and to act in the best interest of the groom. Of all the responsibilities above, I think it safe to mention that if you royally messed them all up, your number one responsibility is to be a friend to the groom and to support him, and that if you do that well, you've succeeded.

There are definitely going to be other tasks your friend may want help with. Just make yourself available, do what you can, and be the good friend you always have been that got you chosen as the best man.

By following these tips you should be able to produce a fantastic best man speech. Take the time to prepare your speech early and write it from your heart. Remember, if you don't have the time or expertise to write your own there are many products on the internet that can help you out. Good luck!
