In cardio exercise, there is no simple answer to which specific exercises burn the most calories. Just like putting a puzzle together, the big picture needs to be looked at before searching for the missing pieces. There are some resistance training exercises that are more obvious than others in burning more calories. The more your muscles are used, the more calories that are burned. Cardio exercise is more complicated due to several factors.
- How hard you are willing to work
- Keeping your routine challenging
- Using different types of cardiac exercises
In a survey conducted, three people of similar age and ability level were given three separate pieces of equipment, a stationary bike, a treadmill and an elliptical. The exercising was timed and measurements were taken for a comparison as to which piece of equipment was the most beneficial in burning the most calories. The results were inconclusive because the pace at which each performed their exercise was not equal. The participant on the bike came in last due to holding up a slower pace than the other two. How hard you are willing to work overrides what type of equipment is used.
Maximizing your routine of exercises to constantly be challenged will deliver better results. If you stick with the same workouts in both cardio and resistance training, your body will plateau to a comfort level and you will stop seeing gains. Simple changes in the number of sets, reps and resistance performed, switching around your exercises or adding new ones can help stimulate new results and break that troublesome plateau you’re experiencing.
Different types of cardiac exercises will not only give you a change in challenge, and help you burn the most calories, but will keep your mind focused on learning new techniques. Ensure you progress to new exercises as your ability increases and don’t settle for mediocre.
When you really concentrate on target areas through cardio exercises eg upper body, lower body, core, you will feel every muscle that is being used. If you don’t, re-examine the way that you are performing the exercises to make sure that the correct muscles are being worked and others are not being strained. If your muscles no longer feel worked and taxed, add a different exercise and change your routine.
Some suggestions for combining resistance and cardio into your workouts are exercises such as pushups, planks, step ups, squats, lunges, close grip push-ups, burpees, just to name a few.
The bottom line is that there is no one exercise or piece of equipment that will work for each individual. Pay close attention in the muscles that are being used and never let the routine get boring or easy. Your body will learn to work more efficiently and burn the most calories plus be challenged with each new step you take in your workout. Remember that you should always seek advice from a certified exercise professional and your GP before starting any new exercise or eating plan.
